Why Nairobi in October Feels Different: Jacarandas, Light, Weekends

Ask a Nairobian to name the month the city is most itself and a surprising number will say October. Not because anything in particular happens, but because of how it feels. Nairobi in October has a quality of light, a temperature, a smell and a colour that the rest of the year does not quite manage, and people who have lived here long enough plan around it without quite saying so. This is an attempt to explain the feeling, and to make the case for spending a weekend inside it, ideally in the green southern suburb of Karen, where Karen Plains Hotel sits a few minutes from the lanes that show the month at its best.

The light at the end of the dry season

By October the long dry season has been running since June, and the air over the city has a particular clarity. Dust has settled into the colour of things rather than hanging in the sky; the mornings are sharp and cool, around 13 to 15 degrees, and the sun comes up quickly over the Athi plains and the park. By ten it is warm, by two it is 25 or 26, and the shadows are hard-edged. Then, more days than not in the second half of the month, clouds gather in the afternoon, a shower passes, and for an hour the light goes soft and silver and the whole city looks freshly painted.

Photographers talk about this light, but you do not need a camera to notice it. It is the light you see from a balcony in Karen at six in the evening, when the indigenous trees go dark green against a sky that is still pale, and the first lamps come on in the gardens. It is the reason October evenings feel longer than they are.

Why Nairobi in October turns purple

The jacarandas are the obvious answer, and they deserve it. Jacaranda mimosifolia, a South American tree planted across the colonial town from the early 1900s, flowers at exactly this hinge of the year, as the dry season ends and the first short rains arrive. The colour starts as a scattering in early October and, by the last ten days of the month, has become a canopy over State House Road, Kilimani, Lavington, Upper Hill and the lanes of Karen. The flowers fall as fast as they open, so the pavements turn purple too.

What makes it affecting is the contrast. The city has been brown and gold for months. Grass in Nairobi National Park is short and bleached, the Ngong Hills are the colour of lions, and then, without warning, violet. The trees are not native and everyone knows it, yet they have become the clearest signal that the year is turning. For the full story of how they got here, read our history of jacaranda trees in Nairobi; for where to see them, our jacaranda season guide.

The smell of the first rain

Every tropical city has a version of this, but Nairobi's is particular because the dry season is so long and the soil so red. The first serious shower of the short rains, which usually comes in the second half of October, lifts a smell from the earth that people here recognise instantly: warm dust, wet murram, crushed leaves, something faintly sweet from the jacaranda flowers already on the ground. For a day or two afterwards the city is noticeably greener, the birds are louder, and the evening air is cool enough that you want a jacket on the balcony.

The rains in October are rarely a problem for visitors. They tend to arrive mid-afternoon and clear by evening, and mornings stay bright. Pack a light layer and a compact umbrella and carry on. Our October travel tips cover the detail.

A month with room in it

October also feels different because of how it sits in the calendar. The European and North American summer rush has passed, the December diaspora homecoming has not begun, and the city's visitors are a gentler mix of business travellers, safari guests passing through and locals taking a weekend. Nairobi National Park, about 20 to 30 minutes from Karen, is in excellent form, with short dry-season grass, animals near water and the first Palearctic migrant birds arriving among the park's 400-plus recorded species. The Masai Mara herds are beginning their drift south, which gives October safari-goers a last look at the migration.

Two public holidays punctuate the month. Mazingira Day, Kenya's environment day, falls on Saturday 10 October in 2026 and lends itself to a Friday-to-Sunday break built around trees and green spaces. Mashujaa Day, which honours the nation's heroes, falls on Tuesday 20 October, and plenty of people take the Monday to make a four-day weekend. Neither moves to a Monday by law, but both change the mood of the city. Our Nairobi this weekend hub keeps track of what is on.

Where to feel it most: Karen

Every part of Nairobi has its October, but Karen holds the most of it. The suburb was laid out as farm plots in the early colonial period and kept its trees as it grew, so the jacarandas here are part of the everyday scenery, overhanging garden walls on Karen Road, Bogani Road and around Ndege Road. The Giraffe Centre is about ten minutes away, the Karen Blixen Museum about the same, Oloolua's forest trail about ten, and the park gate under half an hour. The cafés have gardens. The evenings are quiet enough to hear the hadada ibis going to roost.

Karen Plains Hotel, on Karen Plains Road, is a small and honest place to stay inside that atmosphere. The rooms are clean and ensuite, with comfortable beds, hot showers, fast Wi-Fi, a work desk and Netflix, and some have a balcony onto trees. Parking is free and secure, reception is open 24/7, a backup generator keeps the rooms and Wi-Fi going, and breakfast is available from 7:00 to 10:30am. Transfers from JKIA or Wilson are arranged on request. If quiet is the point of your weekend, our page on choosing a quiet hotel in Nairobi says more, and the Karen neighbourhood guide maps the suburb.

How to spend an October weekend inside the feeling

  • Friday evening: arrive by late afternoon, take the balcony or the shared lounge, and watch the light go.
  • Saturday dawn: walk or drive Karen's jacaranda lanes before the roads wake. Breakfast at the hotel or under a tree at a garden café.
  • Saturday afternoon: giraffes, the Blixen house, Kazuri Beads; or, if the clouds come, back out to the trees in the soft light.
  • Sunday morning: either the park at first light for wildlife, or the city loop through State House Road and the Arboretum while the traffic is light.
  • Sunday afternoon: a long lunch and nothing else.

FAQ: Nairobi in October

What is the weather like in Nairobi in October?

Warm, sunny days around 24 to 27 degrees and cool evenings around 13 to 15 degrees, with the short rains usually arriving from late October as brief late-afternoon showers. Mornings are generally clear and bright.

Why is October considered a special month in Nairobi?

It is the hinge between the long dry season and the short rains, which brings clear light, the first rain on dry earth and the jacaranda bloom, all within a few weeks. Wildlife viewing is also excellent and the city is less crowded than in high season.

Is Nairobi in October good for a weekend trip?

Yes. Two public holidays, Mazingira Day on Saturday 10 October and Mashujaa Day on Tuesday 20 October in 2026, make long weekends easy, and Karen offers trees, wildlife and quiet within a short drive of the city.

Where in Nairobi do you feel the October atmosphere most?

The older, greener districts: State House Road and the Arboretum, Kilimani, Lavington, Muthaiga and Karen. Karen combines mature jacarandas, garden cafés and proximity to the Giraffe Centre and Nairobi National Park.

Do I need to pack for rain in Nairobi in October?

A light jacket and a compact umbrella are enough. Showers tend to be short and come in the afternoon, so plan outdoor activities for the morning and keep the afternoons flexible.

Nairobi in October is not an event. It is a mood, made of light and dust and rain and a borrowed purple tree, and it lasts a few weeks. The best way to understand it is to be here, early in the morning, somewhere green.
