Jacaranda Season in Nairobi: Where to See the Purple Bloom This October

For a few weeks each year, the colour of Nairobi changes. Somewhere around the second week of October the first jacaranda trees along State House Road and through the lanes of Karen begin to loosen their flowers, and by the time the short rains arrive the city is working under a canopy of lilac and violet. If you are planning a trip around jacaranda season in Nairobi, this is the guide to read first: where the bloom is strongest, when to come, how to see it well, and why a quiet base in Karen, at Karen Plains Hotel on Karen Plains Road, makes the whole thing easier.

The trees are not native. Jacaranda mimosifolia came from South America and was planted across the young colonial town from the early 1900s, along avenues, in gardens and around institutions. More than a century on, the purple has become part of how the city sees itself. Nairobians photograph it, argue about which street has the best display, and quietly plan their walks around it.

When jacaranda season in Nairobi actually happens

The bloom is tied to the weather rather than the calendar. Jacarandas flower at the tail end of the long dry season, as the first short rains arrive, which in Nairobi usually means from about mid October into November. Early October tends to be the overture: a handful of trees in full colour, most still bare or half-dressed. By late October the display is generally at its fullest, and the fallen flowers begin to carpet pavements and driveways. In November the petals thin out and the leaves return.

Because the timing shifts a little from year to year, it is worth building some flexibility into a trip. A stay of three or four nights, with mornings kept free for walks and drives, gives you a far better chance of catching the peak than a single rushed afternoon. Daytime temperatures in October sit around 24 to 27 degrees, evenings cool to the mid teens, and any rain tends to come as a late-afternoon shower. Where to see the purple bloom: the best streets and parks

Nairobi's jacarandas are spread across the older, greener parts of the city. These are the places locals head to first.

  • State House Road and the Nairobi Arboretum. The classic view. The road runs under mature trees and the Arboretum next to it holds a large collection of labelled species, jacarandas among them, with paths that are easy to walk. About 40 minutes by car from Karen, traffic depending.
  • Upper Hill and Kilimani. Office towers rising out of purple canopies, which makes for the city's most distinctive contrast shot. Best seen from the roads rather than on foot.
  • Lavington and Muthaiga. Residential, quiet, generously planted. Drive slowly, keep to public roads, and resist the urge to wander up private drives.
  • City Park. One of the oldest green spaces in Nairobi, with old trees and a loose, slightly wild feel.
  • Karen's leafy lanes. Karen Road, Bogani Road and the Ndege Road area hold some of the loveliest, least crowded jacarandas in the city. If you are staying at Karen Plains Hotel, these are a few minutes away, which means you can walk out early and be back before breakfast.

Our Karen neighbourhood guide covers the lanes, cafés and attractions around the hotel in more detail.

A simple two-day plan for the bloom

Day one, Karen. Start early, when the light is soft and the roads are quiet, and walk or drive the lanes near the hotel. Carry on to the Giraffe Centre, about ten minutes away, then take coffee at one of Karen's garden cafés, where the tables sit under trees. In the afternoon, when the light is harsher, visit the Karen Blixen Museum or browse Kazuri Beads and the craft centres. Dinner is a short drive to The Hub Karen or Waterfront Karen.

Day two, the city. Leave Karen after breakfast and head towards State House Road and the Arboretum. Walk the Arboretum paths first, then loop by car through Kilimani and Lavington. Finish with a late lunch in the city or back in Karen, and keep the evening free for a balcony and a book. Several Karen Plains rooms have a balcony looking onto trees, which in October is reason enough to come home early.

If you would like to pair the bloom with wildlife, read our guide to jacarandas and safari mornings in Nairobi. Nairobi National Park's main gate is about 20 to 30 minutes from Karen, and early October is excellent for game viewing.

How to see jacarandas well

A few practical notes make the difference between a good morning and a frustrating one.

  • Go early. Between seven and nine in the morning the light is gentle, the colour reads true, and the roads are not yet busy.
  • Overcast is your friend. A grey sky after an afternoon shower deepens the purple and removes harsh shadows. Do not cancel a walk because the sun has gone in.
  • Look down as well as up. The fallen carpet on pavements and driveways is as photogenic as the canopy, especially after rain.
  • Respect private property. Many of the finest trees are in gardens. Shoot from the road, keep gates and guards in mind, and do not climb walls for a better angle.
  • Mind the traffic. State House Road and the Kilimani roads carry real traffic. Step off the road to frame a shot, and never stop a car where it blocks a lane.

Why Karen is the right base for jacaranda season

Karen is one of the greenest parts of Nairobi, and the jacarandas here are part of the everyday landscape rather than a destination. You see them from the car on the way to breakfast, over garden walls, along the roads to the Giraffe Centre and the Blixen museum. Staying in the suburb means the bloom is around you from the moment you wake, not something you drive across town to find.

Karen Plains Hotel sits at Karen Plains Arcade on Karen Plains Road, a short drive from the suburb's cafés and malls. The rooms are clean and ensuite, with comfortable beds, hot showers, fast Wi-Fi, a work desk and Netflix on the TV. Some rooms have a balcony. There is free secure parking, which matters if you are self-driving the jacaranda routes, a backup generator covering guest rooms and Wi-Fi, 24/7 reception for early starts, and breakfast available from 7:00 to 10:30am. Airport transfers from JKIA or Wilson can be arranged on request and quoted on WhatsApp. Have a look at the rooms or the wider case for a quiet hotel in Nairobi.

Frequently asked questions about jacaranda season in Nairobi

When is the best time to see jacarandas in Nairobi?

Most years the bloom builds through October and peaks from the second half of the month into early November, as the short rains begin. The exact timing shifts a little with the weather, so a stay of several nights in the second half of October gives you the best odds.

Which is the most famous jacaranda street in Nairobi?

State House Road, beside the Nairobi Arboretum, is the street most Nairobians name first. Upper Hill and Kilimani offer the dramatic contrast of purple canopies against office towers, while Karen's lanes are quieter and easier to walk.

Can I see jacarandas in Karen without a car?

Yes. Karen Road, Bogani Road and the Ndege Road area are a short distance from Karen Plains Hotel, and early-morning walks there are pleasant. For State House Road, the Arboretum and the city routes, a car or taxi is more practical, and reception can help you arrange one.

Is October a good month to visit Nairobi apart from the jacarandas?

It is one of the best. Days are warm and mostly dry, evenings are cool, Nairobi National Park is in fine form for wildlife, and the short rains tend to arrive as brief late-afternoon showers rather than washouts.

Does Karen Plains Hotel arrange transport to the jacaranda spots?

The hotel does not run its own tours, but private drivers, tours and local movement support can be arranged on request. Message the team on WhatsApp with your dates and the places you want to see and they will guide you.

The purple does not last long, which is precisely why it matters. Come in the second half of October, keep your mornings free, stay somewhere green, and let the city show you its gentlest season.
