Ask a Nairobian what is Mazingira Day and you may get three different answers, depending on how old they are. To one generation, 10 October will always be Moi Day. To another it is Huduma Day, or Utamaduni Day. Since 2024 it has been Mazingira Day, Kenya's environment holiday, and the name has finally stuck to something that feels like a shared purpose: trees, soil, rivers and the air of a city that is growing faster than its green cover.

This article sets out the history behind the date, what the holiday means today, and how to spend it well if you are in Nairobi, with practical suggestions for a weekend based in Karen, where Karen Plains Hotel sits a few minutes from the city's best forest, sanctuary and park experiences.

What is Mazingira Day? The short answer

Mazingira Day is a Kenyan public holiday observed on 10 October each year. Mazingira is the Swahili word for "environment", and the day is dedicated to environmental conservation, with tree planting at its heart. It supports Kenya's national ambition of growing 15 billion trees by 2032, a target that turns an abstract idea into something a family can do with a spade on a Saturday morning.

In 2026, 10 October falls on a Saturday. Kenyan law moves a public holiday to the following Monday only when it falls on a Sunday, so there is no extra weekday off this year. For most people that makes it a Friday-to-Sunday weekend with a theme, and that is how we have planned the suggestions below.

How 10 October changed its name four times

Few dates in the Kenyan calendar have been renamed as often. The holiday began in 1989 as Moi Day, marking the presidency of Daniel arap Moi. When the 2010 Constitution reorganised the country's public holidays, Moi Day was dropped from the list. It did not stay gone: a 2017 court ruling found that the day had never been lawfully removed, and it was reinstated.

What followed was a search for meaning. In 2019 the government renamed it Huduma Day, "service day", encouraging Kenyans to volunteer and serve their communities. In 2023 it became Utamaduni Day, a celebration of culture and heritage. Then, in 2024, it was renamed again as Mazingira Day, aligning the holiday with the national tree-growing programme and a wider push on climate and conservation. The thread running through all four names is a desire for 10 October to be useful rather than merely idle, and the environmental framing has proved the most popular so far. For a broader look at how it sits alongside Mashujaa Day later in the month, see our guide to Kenya's October public holidays.

What happens on the day

Unlike Mashujaa Day or Jamhuri Day, Mazingira Day has no military parade or single national stadium event. Instead, it is marked by tree-planting drives organised by counties, schools, conservation groups and companies, often in forests, along riverbanks and in public spaces that need shade. Nairobi's green institutions, from Karura Forest to the Arboretum and the neighbourhood associations of Karen and Langata, usually host or publicise something.

For a visitor, the simplest way to take part is to ask. Hotels, cafés and community notice boards in Karen tend to know what is happening nearby in the days before the holiday, and the Karen Plains Hotel reception will happily point you towards a planting if one is announced. Bring closed shoes, a hat and water; seedlings are usually provided.

Why October is a good month to be in Nairobi

The holiday arrives at a lovely point in the year. Early October is still dry, with warm days of around 24 to 27°C and cool evenings around 13 to 15°C. The short rains usually begin late in the month, so the first half is bright and reliable for being outdoors. The jacarandas, introduced to Nairobi from South America in the early 1900s, start to flower purple from about now, and the streets of Karen, Kilimani, Lavington and State House Road slowly take on their colour.

In Nairobi National Park, the end of the dry season keeps the grass short and the animals close to water, so game viewing in early October is excellent. Birders will note that Palearctic migrants begin to arrive from October into November, adding to a park list that already exceeds 400 species. A holiday about the environment could hardly be better placed on the calendar.

How to spend Mazingira Day in Nairobi: five ideas from Karen

  1. Plant a tree with a local group. Join a county or community planting drive on the Saturday morning. Karura Forest and Nairobi Arboretum often host events, and Karen's residents' associations regularly organise plantings along local roads. Allow a couple of hours and expect a cheerful, muddy crowd.
  2. Walk Oloolua Nature Trail. About 10 minutes from Karen Plains Hotel by car, this forest trail on the Karen and Ngong Road side follows a river to a waterfall and a cave. Go early while it is cool and quiet, and allow two to three hours. See our Oloolua Nature Trail guide for timings and what to bring.
  3. Visit the Giraffe Centre. Run by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife, the sanctuary protects Rothschild's giraffes and is about 10 minutes from the hotel. Feeding a giraffe at eye level is a conservation story you can touch. Mornings are calmer than afternoons.
  4. Take a dawn game drive in Nairobi National Park. The Langata gate is roughly 20 to 30 minutes away, traffic depending. Leave before 6am, carry binoculars and a warm layer, and you will be back in Karen for a late breakfast with rhino, giraffe and possibly lion in your camera. Our park day-trip page explains how the hotel can help.
  5. Drive the jacaranda lanes and the Arboretum. Karen Road, Bogani Road and the Ndege Road area are the local stretches; Nairobi Arboretum and State House Road are about 40 minutes away and worth the drive on a Sunday morning. The Arboretum page has notes on timing.

Staying in Karen for the weekend

Karen Plains Hotel is a small hotel in Karen Plains Arcade on Karen Plains Road, in the green south-west of the city. The rooms are ensuite and clean, with comfortable beds, hot showers, fast Wi-Fi, a work desk and Netflix on the TV, and some open onto a balcony that looks into trees. Breakfast is served from 7:00 to 10:30am, housekeeping is daily, reception is staffed around the clock and parking is free and secure.

It is an honest, well-run base rather than a resort, which suits a holiday whose whole point is to be outside. A communal guest kitchen, a shared lounge and a backup generator covering rooms and Wi-Fi make longer stays easy, and the One Bedroom Apartment option works for a week or more. Check-in is from 12 noon and check-out is at 10am. For an overview of room types see our rooms page, and for a fuller planning checklist the Plan Your Stay hub covers transfers, breakfast and tours. If you would like a ready-made green itinerary, our Mazingira Day staycation ideas fill the whole weekend.

Arriving from the airport or from town

Karen is about 40 to 60 minutes from the central business district and Upper Hill by car, traffic depending, and about 45 to 60 minutes from Westlands. On the holiday Saturday itself the roads are usually quieter. From JKIA allow 45 to 75 minutes depending on traffic, with the Southern Bypass the quickest route; Wilson Airport is about 25 minutes away. The hotel can arrange airport transfers on request, quoted and confirmed on WhatsApp once you share your flight details.

FAQ: what is Mazingira Day and how do I plan around it?

What does the word Mazingira mean?

Mazingira is Swahili for "environment" or "surroundings". The holiday's name reflects its purpose: environmental conservation and tree planting, in support of Kenya's goal of growing 15 billion trees by 2032.

When was Mazingira Day introduced?

The name was adopted in 2024. The date, 10 October, has been a public holiday on and off since 1989, when it was created as Moi Day, and it was previously known as Huduma Day (from 2019) and Utamaduni Day (from 2023).

Is Mazingira Day the same as Moi Day?

It is the same date, 10 October, but with a different purpose. Moi Day honoured President Daniel arap Moi from 1989 until it was dropped after the 2010 Constitution. After a 2017 court ruling reinstated the holiday, it was renamed several times and is now dedicated to the environment.

Do shops and attractions in Nairobi open on Mazingira Day?

Most malls, cafés and attractions in Karen open as normal on public holidays, and the Giraffe Centre, Nairobi National Park and Oloolua Nature Trail all welcome visitors. Government offices and banks close. It is sensible to confirm opening hours for smaller venues the day before.

Can a visitor join a tree-planting event?

Yes. Planting drives are generally open to anyone who turns up with closed shoes and a willingness to dig. Ask at the hotel reception or check county and conservation group announcements in the week before 10 October for locations and start times.

Where should I stay to make the most of the holiday weekend?

Karen is the most convenient base for the green side of Nairobi, with Oloolua, the Giraffe Centre, Nairobi National Park and the Ngong Hills all within about 10 to 40 minutes by car. Karen Plains Hotel on Karen Plains Road offers quiet ensuite rooms, free secure parking and help arranging drives and transfers.

A holiday that asks you to plant a tree is a rare thing. Spend it where the trees already are, and let Karen do the rest.
