Two red-letter days shape the month for anyone travelling to the capital: the Kenya October public holidays fall on 10 October, Mazingira Day, and 20 October, Mashujaa Day. One is about the environment, the other about the nation's heroes, and between them they move hotel demand, change traffic patterns and quietly decide which weekend of the month a Nairobi visitor should choose.

This guide puts both dates in one place. It covers what each holiday means, exactly how the 2026 calendar falls, what stays open, how the city behaves and where to stay, with Karen Plains Hotel in Karen as the base we know best for a calm October visit.

Kenya October public holidays at a glance

  • Saturday 10 October 2026, Mazingira Day. Kenya's environment and conservation holiday. Because it falls on a Saturday, and the law only moves a holiday that falls on a Sunday, there is no weekday off. Treat it as a themed weekend.
  • Tuesday 20 October 2026, Mashujaa Day. Heroes' Day, a fixed national holiday. Monday 19 October is a normal working day, but it is the obvious bridge: one day of leave creates a four-night break from Saturday 17 to Tuesday 20.

Those two facts, a Saturday holiday and a Tuesday holiday, are the whole planning puzzle. The first weekend is relaxed and unremarkable in demand; the second is the busiest leisure block of the month for Nairobi's smaller hotels.

Mazingira Day: what it is and how it feels in the city

The 10 October holiday has had four names. Created as Moi Day in 1989, dropped after the 2010 Constitution, reinstated by a 2017 court ruling, it became Huduma Day in 2019, Utamaduni Day in 2023 and Mazingira Day in 2024. Mazingira is Swahili for "environment", and the day is now dedicated to tree planting and conservation, in support of Kenya's goal of 15 billion trees by 2032.

In Nairobi it is a gentle holiday. Counties, schools and conservation groups run planting drives, and families head for Karura Forest, the Arboretum, Oloolua Nature Trail or Nairobi National Park. Malls, cafés and attractions open as usual; government offices and banks close. For the full history see what is Mazingira Day.

Mashujaa Day: the heavier anniversary

Mashujaa Day remembers 20 October 1952, when the colonial government declared a State of Emergency and arrested the Kapenguria Six: Jomo Kenyatta, Bildad Kaggia, Kung'u Karumba, Fred Kubai, Paul Ngei and Achieng' Oneko. Observed as Kenyatta Day after independence, it was renamed under the 2010 Constitution to honour every Kenyan who contributed to independence and nation-building. The national celebrations rotate between counties each year, with the host announced closer to the date.

In the capital, expect flags, television coverage of the main ceremony and quieter roads. It is a good day for museums: the Nairobi National Museum, the Kenya National Archives and Uhuru Gardens all tell parts of the story. Our Mashujaa Day history guide goes deeper.

October weather and what else is happening

Both holidays arrive at the end of the long dry season. Days are warm and sunny, typically 24 to 27°C, and evenings cool to 13 to 15°C. The short rains usually begin in late October, often as afternoon showers, so Mazingira Day is almost always dry and Mashujaa Day sometimes catches the first rain. Jacarandas flower from early October into November along Karen's lanes, State House Road, the Arboretum, Kilimani and Lavington. In Nairobi National Park, short grass and animals gathered near water make early-October game viewing excellent, and Palearctic migrant birds begin arriving from October. In the Masai Mara, the migration herds typically start drifting back south towards the Serengeti around now, which matters if Nairobi is your stopover. Choosing your October weekend

Choose 9 to 11 October if you want the city at its driest, the park at its most reliable, lighter demand for rooms and a holiday that asks nothing of you beyond being outdoors. It suits international visitors on a wider Kenya itinerary and locals wanting an easy staycation.

Choose 17 to 20 October if you can take Monday off and want the longest break of the autumn. Four nights allow a dawn game drive, a museum day in town, a Ngong Hills sunset and still a morning with nothing in it. Book earlier for this block; Karen's hotels are small.

Choose both if you are in Nairobi for work across the middle of the month. The One Bedroom Apartment option at Karen Plains Hotel suits a stay that bridges the two holidays, and the October 2026 page sets out how the team handles longer bookings.

Where to stay in Nairobi for the holidays

Central Nairobi and Upper Hill are convenient for offices and the museum district but feel emptied out on holidays. Westlands and Gigiri suit business and diplomatic travel. Karen, in the green south-west, is where the city goes to relax: the Giraffe Centre, Karen Blixen Museum and Oloolua Nature Trail about 10 minutes away, the Bomas of Kenya 10 to 15, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust about 15 and Nairobi National Park's Langata gate 20 to 30, traffic depending.

Karen Plains Hotel sits in Karen Plains Arcade on Karen Plains Road. It offers clean ensuite rooms with comfortable beds, hot showers, fast Wi-Fi, a work desk and Netflix on the TV, some with a balcony. There is free secure parking, 24/7 reception, daily housekeeping, breakfast from 7:00 to 10:30am, a chef on request for dinner, a communal guest kitchen, a shared lounge, a boardroom for anyone mixing work with the holiday and a backup generator covering rooms and Wi-Fi. Check-in is from 12 noon, check-out at 10am. International visitors will find practical notes on the international visitors page, and the Plan Your Stay hub brings transfers, breakfast and tours together.

Transfers, traffic and holiday logistics

JKIA is about 45 to 75 minutes from Karen depending on traffic, with the Southern Bypass the quickest route; Wilson Airport is about 25 minutes. Airport transfers are arranged on request and quoted on WhatsApp once you send flight details. On the holidays themselves, roads across the city are markedly lighter, which makes them the best days for a trip into town. Ride-hailing apps work well in Karen, and the hotel can arrange a driver for the park, the Ngong Hills or a city tour. Park and sanctuary fees are paid separately, in most cases online or at the gate.

Flying into Nairobi this October? Karen Plains Hotel can help arrange airport transfers from JKIA or Wilson Airport on request. Send your flight details on WhatsApp before arrival so the team can guide you on timing, pickup and check-in.

FAQ: Kenya October public holidays for Nairobi visitors

What are the public holidays in Kenya in October 2026?

There are two: Mazingira Day on Saturday 10 October and Mashujaa Day on Tuesday 20 October. Neither creates an automatic Monday off in 2026, because Kenyan law only moves a holiday that falls on a Sunday.

Do hotels in Nairobi get busy over the October holidays?

The Mashujaa Day block, Saturday 17 to Tuesday 20 October, is the busier of the two because many people take Monday as leave. Mazingira Day weekend is usually calmer. Small hotels in Karen fill first, so book directly and early for the dates you want.

Are shops, malls and attractions open on Kenyan public holidays?

Yes, in general. Malls, cafés, the Giraffe Centre, Nairobi National Park and museums open on public holidays, while banks and government offices close. Confirm hours for smaller venues the day before, especially on Mashujaa Day.

Is October a good month to visit Nairobi?

It is one of the best. Days are warm and mostly dry, evenings are cool, jacarandas are in bloom and dry-season wildlife viewing in Nairobi National Park is still excellent in the first half of the month. The short rains usually arrive late in October.

Can Karen Plains Hotel help with transport on holiday dates?

Yes. Airport transfers from JKIA or Wilson, drivers for game drives and city tours, and local movement advice are all arranged on request. Send your dates and plans on WhatsApp and the team will quote and confirm.

Which is better for a first-time visitor, the 10 October or 20 October weekend?

For a first visit, 9 to 11 October offers drier weather and lighter demand, with excellent park conditions. If you can take Monday 19 October off, the four-night Mashujaa Day block gives more time for both wildlife and the city's history.

October gives Nairobi two reasons to pause and one very good suburb to pause in. Pick your weekend, book your room and let the holidays do the rest.

Book directly for either October holiday. Secure your dates before demand rises and get quick WhatsApp support on rooms, breakfast and transfers.
