A Weekend in Karen, Nairobi: The Perfect Itinerary

A Weekend in Karen, Nairobi: The Perfect Itinerary

Karen is one of Nairobi's most rewarding neighbourhoods for a weekend stay — leafy, well-served, and packed with wildlife, culture, and excellent food within a compact area. Whether you are visiting Nairobi for the first time or returning for another stay, this itinerary gives you the best of Karen across two days.

Friday Evening — Arrive and Settle In

If you are arriving from JKIA, read our guide on how to get from JKIA to Karen to plan your transfer. Karen Plains Hotel offers airport transfer directly from JKIA — your driver will be waiting at arrivals.

Check in, freshen up, and head to Moss Oasis restaurant at Karen Plains Hotel for dinner. If you prefer to explore the neighbourhood, The Rusty Nail and Talisman are both within 10 minutes and ideal for a relaxed first evening. Keep it early — Saturday starts before dawn.

Saturday Morning — Nairobi National Park Game Drive

Set your alarm for 5:30am. Breakfast at Karen Plains Hotel is served early for game drive guests — fuel up before heading out.

Nairobi National Park opens at 6am and the main gate (Maasai Gate) is 10 minutes from Karen Plains Hotel. Early morning is the best time for wildlife — lions are most active before the heat of the day, and the light is exceptional for photography. A half-day game drive takes 3 to 4 hours and commonly delivers sightings of lions, black rhinos, giraffes, buffalo, and hundreds of bird species.

Return to the hotel by 10am for a late breakfast or brunch. Read our Nairobi National Park game drive guide for what to expect, entry fees, and tips.

Saturday Afternoon — Giraffe Centre and Karen Blixen Museum

After a rest, head out for the afternoon wildlife and culture circuit.

Giraffe Centre (allow 90 minutes) — The Giraffe Centre is 15 minutes from Karen Plains Hotel. Hand-feed endangered Rothschild giraffes at eye level from a raised wooden platform — one of the most memorable wildlife experiences in East Africa and suitable for all ages. Arrive by 2pm to avoid the afternoon school groups.

Karen Blixen Museum (allow 2 hours) — After the Giraffe Centre, head to the Karen Blixen Museum — 10 minutes away. The beautifully restored colonial farmhouse, set in mature grounds with views of the Ngong Hills, is open until 6pm. Combine with the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden next door for a late afternoon tea in the museum grounds.

Saturday Evening — Dinner in Karen

Karen has excellent evening dining options. For a special dinner, Talisman on Ngong Road is one of the neighbourhood's most celebrated restaurants — book in advance at weekends. For something more relaxed, The Rusty Nail is a reliable Karen favourite with a good outdoor setting. For a uniquely Nairobi experience, Carnivore is a 15-minute drive toward Langata.

Return to Karen Plains Hotel for the night. If it's during the FIFA World Cup 2026 (11 June to 19 July), Moss Oasis restaurant is screening matches live — the late-night kickoff times for East Africa make staying at the hotel particularly convenient. See our World Cup screening details here.

Sunday Morning — David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

Sunday morning has a fixed highlight: the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage. Public visiting hours are 11am to 12pm daily — arrive by 10:45am to get a good spot. The orphanage is adjacent to Nairobi National Park's main gate, approximately 10 minutes from Karen Plains Hotel.

Baby elephants rescued from the wild are brought out for their midday mud bath and feeding. It is one of the most moving wildlife experiences available anywhere in East Africa — and unlike anything else you can do in a capital city. Entry is by donation.

After the elephant orphanage, a quick visit to the adjacent Nairobi Safari Walk (run by Kenya Wildlife Service) rounds out the morning wildlife programme.

Sunday Afternoon — Lunch and Karen Neighbourhood Exploration

Return to Karen for a proper Sunday lunch. Cultiva is an excellent choice if you prefer a farm-to-table experience — their Sunday menu is particularly good. Artcaffe Karen is reliable for a more casual option.

After lunch, explore Karen on foot or by Uber. The Karen Shopping Centre and Waterfront Shopping Centre have a good mix of local boutiques, craft shops, and coffee spots. The Karen area has a relaxed, village-like character that is genuinely pleasant to wander through — very different from Nairobi's city centre.

Sunday Evening — Departure or One More Night

If you are departing Sunday evening, Karen Plains Hotel can arrange your transfer to JKIA — allow 60 to 75 minutes for the journey. If you have flexibility, consider extending your stay by a night — there is more to Karen than a weekend can fully cover, and the hotel team can suggest itinerary additions based on what you've already done.
