What to Expect on a Nairobi National Park Game Drive

What to Expect on a Nairobi National Park Game Drive

Nairobi National Park is one of the most remarkable wildlife experiences in the world — a fully fenced national park sitting on the edge of a capital city, home to lions, rhinos, leopards, giraffes, buffalo, and over 400 bird species. This guide covers everything you need to know before your visit.

What Makes Nairobi National Park Unique?

Nairobi National Park is the only national park in the world located within a capital city. The Nairobi skyline is visible from inside the park — an extraordinary juxtaposition of urban life and wild Africa that makes for some of the most memorable safari photographs you will ever take. The park covers 117 square kilometres and has been a protected area since 1946.

What Animals Will You See?

Nairobi National Park supports a remarkable density of wildlife for its size. Commonly spotted animals include:

  • Lions — the park has a resident pride and sightings are relatively frequent
  • Black rhino — Nairobi National Park is one of Kenya's most important black rhino sanctuaries
  • Leopard — present but elusive; early morning drives give the best chance
  • Buffalo — large herds are common throughout the park
  • Giraffe — frequently seen, particularly in the acacia woodland areas
  • Zebra and wildebeest — abundant, particularly during the migration season when herds move through the open corridor to the south
  • Cheetah — occasionally spotted on the open plains
  • Hippo — resident in the Hippo Pools area along the Athi River

The park does not have elephants — the open southern corridor is not suitable for elephant movement — but every other major savannah species is represented.

When Is the Best Time for a Game Drive?

Early morning is the best time for a game drive in Nairobi National Park. Animals are most active in the cooler hours between 6am and 9am, predators are more likely to be on the move, and the light is excellent for photography. Late afternoon from 4pm to 6pm is also productive.

The park is open daily from 6am to 6pm. Midday drives are possible but wildlife activity typically drops during the heat of the day.

How Long Does a Game Drive Take?

A standard half-day game drive lasts approximately 3 to 4 hours. A full-day drive with a picnic at the Hippo Pools can extend to 6 to 7 hours. Most visitors staying in Karen opt for a half-day morning drive, returning to the hotel for a late breakfast or early lunch.

Getting to Nairobi National Park from Karen

The main gate — Maasai Gate — is approximately 10 to 15 minutes from Karen Plains Hotel, making Karen one of the most convenient bases for a park visit. There is no need to cross the city or deal with Nairobi traffic heading to the main gate from Karen.

Karen Plains Hotel can arrange a guided game drive to Nairobi National Park directly from the hotel. Browse our Nairobi National Park day trip packages here or WhatsApp us on +254 796 689 928 to book.

Do You Need a Guide?

Self-drive is permitted in Nairobi National Park if you have a suitable vehicle. However, a knowledgeable guide significantly improves your experience — guides know animal movements, can read tracks, and will take you to the right areas based on recent sightings. If this is your first time in the park, a guided drive is strongly recommended.

Entry Fees

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) charges entry fees per person per day. Non-resident adult rates are currently USD 60 per person. Fees are paid via the KWS online portal or M-Pesa at the gate. Rates are subject to change — check the KWS website for current pricing before your visit.

What Else Is Near the Park?

After your game drive, Karen has several excellent options for the rest of your day:

  • The Giraffe Centre — 15 minutes from the park gate, a must-visit for families and first-time visitors
  • David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust — the world-famous elephant orphanage, adjacent to the park's main gate
  • Karen Blixen Museum — the former home of Out of Africa author Karen Blixen, 10 minutes from the hotel
  • Carnivore Restaurant — one of Nairobi's most iconic dining experiences, close to the park entrance
