A Kenyan safari over the holidays usually starts and ends in Nairobi. Those city nights can feel like dead time between flights, or they can be a comfortable, well-organised part of the trip. This guide shows you how to build your own Karen stopover around a December or January safari: when to add nights, what we arrange, what our safari partner handles, and what is quoted separately.

Step one: decide before, after, or both
Each option solves a different problem. Pick the one that matches your flights.
| Stopover | Why it helps | Things to plan |
|---|---|---|
| Before the safari | Recover from a long flight and start the safari rested | Airport pickup, packed breakfast for an early departure, luggage storage for bags you won't take |
| After the safari | Wash the dust off before flying home | Laundry, a proper meal, a transfer that fits your flight |
| Both | Leave spare luggage with us and travel light | Dates for both stays, and what you'll leave behind |
Whichever you choose, pick your own dates in the booking engine. Around Christmas and New Year, flight times can shift, so think about whether an extra night gives you a useful buffer.
Step two: sort your transfers
Many safari itineraries use two airports: Jomo Kenyatta International (JKIA) for international flights, and Wilson Airport, where many flights to the parks depart. Karen is in south-west Nairobi. We arrange private transfers to and from both, priced per vehicle, one way.
- JKIA: sedan US$55 (up to three people) or 4×4 Land Cruiser US$95 (up to six).
- Wilson Airport: sedan US$45 or 4×4 US$85.
Send us your flight numbers and times. Journey times vary with Nairobi traffic; check a live traffic app for your schedule and allow extra time during the holidays. Light-aircraft flights may limit luggage, so check your safari operator's allowance and use our luggage storage for the rest.
Step three: plan the safari itself with our partner
We don't run safaris ourselves. For longer trips, we work with Travel Corporation Limited (Travel Corp), a travel company based at The Hub Karen. Here's how the partnership works in practice:
- You tell us what you want: dates, budget range, who's travelling, and the kind of experience you're after.
- Travel Corp plans and quotes: they put together an itinerary and give you a quote for it. What's included depends on that quote, so read it carefully.
- Travel Corp operates it: the safari is run by the partner, not by Karen Plains Hotel.
- Park fees are extra unless your quote says otherwise.
- Sightings are never certain: wildlife moves freely, and no honest operator can promise particular animals.
We stay your point of contact at the hotel end: your room, your transfers, your stored luggage and your meals before and after.
Already booked a safari with another operator? That's fine. Tell us their pickup time and we'll plan breakfast and check-out around it.
Step four: fill the Nairobi days
If you have a spare day in Nairobi, you don't need to go far.
- Nairobi National Park half-day tour: wildlife on the edge of the city, bookable through us. Park fees apply.
- Giraffe Centre tour: an easy outing in Karen, bookable through us.
- David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and Karen Blixen Museum: both in or near Karen. Check their official information for visiting arrangements over the holidays.
- A spa afternoon: our offsite partner, Manama Spa & Barbershop, is a short drive away on Lang'ata Road. Staying guests get free pickup and drop-off; treatments are paid to Manama.

Step five: eat well on both sides of the bush
Kenyan, Swahili and traditional African cooking is central to a stay with us, and it's a good way to start or finish a Kenyan trip. Breakfast runs 7:00 to 10:30. Lunch and dinner at the hotel can be added for US$40 per day for both meals. For early safari departures, ask for a packed breakfast.
For a meal out, Cave à Manger, The Wine Box's wine-paired restaurant, is in Karen Plains Arcade with the hotel, and The Waterfront Karen is a few steps away. Book restaurant tables directly.
Step six: choose a room for a short stay
- Deluxe Room: a king bed and a proper workspace for sorting photos and plans.
- Deluxe Room with Bathtub and Balcony: a freestanding bathtub and a private balcony for your first or last evening in Kenya.
- King Room with Balcony: a private balcony for sundowners before an early night.
A sample holiday stopover (an example, not a package)
- Day 1: land at JKIA, private transfer to Karen, check in from 12:00, early dinner.
- Day 2: half-day Nairobi National Park tour, afternoon rest, laundry sorted.
- Day 3: packed breakfast, transfer to Wilson Airport, safari with Travel Corp. Spare bags stay with us.
- Days 4 to 8: on safari.
- Day 9: return to Karen, long bath, laundry (US$20 per bag), dinner at the hotel.
- Day 10: check out by 10:00 and leave bags with us, visit the Giraffe Centre, then an evening transfer to JKIA.
What's quoted separately
Your room rate comes from the booking engine. Everything else is confirmed before you commit: transfers, meals, tours, park fees, the Travel Corp itinerary and any Manama treatments. Nothing is bundled unless your quote says so.
Plan your stay with us
Book the Nairobi nights on either side of your safari, then send us your flight times and safari plans. We'll handle the airport runs, the stored bags and the early breakfasts, and introduce you to Travel Corp if you still need a safari. Check live availability for your dates.
