Jacarandas and Safari Mornings: How to Plan a Beautiful October Trip to Nairobi

There is a morning available in Nairobi in late October that very few cities on earth can offer. You leave your hotel in the dark, pass through a park gate as the sky greys, watch giraffe and buffalo and, with luck, lion in short golden grass with office towers on the horizon, and then drive home along roads overhung with purple blossom in time for a late breakfast. A well-planned October trip to Nairobi can hold both halves of that morning, the wild and the cultivated, within a single sunrise, and this guide explains how to put them together from a base in Karen at Karen Plains Hotel on Karen Plains Road.

Why October is the month for both

The timing is a happy coincidence of ecology. Nairobi National Park is at the end of its long dry season in early October: the grass is short, the waterholes and the Hippo Pools draw animals in, visibility is excellent and the mornings are cool and clear. At the same moment, the jacarandas planted across the city from the early 1900s begin to flower, triggered by the approach of the short rains, and by the last ten days of the month the older avenues and the lanes of Karen are fully purple. The rains themselves tend to come as brief late-afternoon showers, which leave the mornings free for both the park and the trees.

October also brings the first Palearctic migrant birds to the park's 400-plus recorded species, and in the Masai Mara the migration herds are beginning to drift south towards the Serengeti, so a trip that starts in Nairobi can carry on to the Mara with the last of the spectacle still on. Our safaris from Nairobi page covers onward options.

Planning an October trip to Nairobi around sunrise

The whole plan rests on one early morning, so build the trip to protect it.

  • Arrive the day before. Fly in, transfer to Karen, check in from noon, and spend the afternoon lightly: a walk along the jacaranda lanes near the hotel, an early dinner at The Hub or Waterfront Karen, and bed by ten.
  • 5:00am wake, 5:45am departure. The park's main gate on the Langata side is about 20 to 30 minutes from Karen and opens around six. Arriving as it opens gives you the best light and the most active animals. Park fees are paid through the Kenya Wildlife Service's online system; check the current process before you travel.
  • 6:00 to 9:30am in the park. Head for the Athi Basin and the Hippo Pools, keep the windows down, and let the guide or driver read the grass. Rhino, giraffe, buffalo, zebra and plains game are reliable; lion are regularly seen but never guaranteed. The Ivory Burning Site is worth a short stop for its history.
  • 10:00am, the purple drive home. Return to Karen along the suburb's leafy roads, slowing through Karen Road and the Bogani and Ndege Road area where the jacarandas are fullest. Breakfast at the hotel is available until 10:30am, so ask reception in advance if you are cutting it fine, or stop at a garden café on the way.
  • The rest of the day, slowly. Giraffe Centre at about ten minutes away, the Karen Blixen Museum, Kazuri Beads, and the balcony when the afternoon clouds come in.

For a more detailed park briefing, including what to carry and how the half-day differs from the full day, read our park day trip page and the campaign post on safari before breakfast.

Dawn at the park gate, purple on the drive home, breakfast by ten. What the two halves ask of you

For the park: warm layers for the first hour, which is around 13 to 15 degrees; binoculars; a long lens if you have one; water; patience. Stay in the vehicle except at designated points, keep voices low near animals, and do not ask a driver to leave the road for a closer look.

For the jacarandas: the same long lens, a wide one if you carry it, and a willingness to pull well off the road. Photograph from the verge, not the carriageway; keep out of private gardens; and if the sky clouds over in the afternoon, go back out, because overcast light is kind to purple. Our guide to the best places to photograph jacarandas has the craft detail.

For both: an early night, and a hotel that does not mind what time you leave.

A three-night version

If the one-morning plan is the spine, three nights lets you add flesh. Night one as above. Day two, the dawn park run and the purple drive home, then an afternoon in Karen. Day three, a late start: a Sunday-morning loop into the city for State House Road and the Nairobi Arboretum, about 40 minutes away, while traffic is light, and lunch before heading back. Day four, either an onward transfer to Wilson Airport, about 25 minutes from Karen, for a flight to the Mara, or a last unhurried morning before JKIA. A fourth night absorbs any morning the weather spoils. If you are continuing on safari, our page for guests heading to the Masai Mara explains how the hotel handles early departures.

Where to stay: a Karen base built for dawn starts

Karen Plains Hotel sits on Karen Plains Road, under half an hour from the park gate and a few minutes from the suburb's jacaranda lanes. Reception is open 24/7, so a 5:45am departure is routine rather than a favour, and free secure parking means a hired vehicle or a tour operator's car can wait at the door. Rooms are clean and ensuite with comfortable beds and hot showers, which matter after a dusty morning, plus fast Wi-Fi, a work desk and Netflix; some have a balcony looking onto trees. A backup generator covers the rooms and Wi-Fi. Breakfast is available from 7:00 to 10:30am, laundry is available, and private tours, game drives and activity support can be arranged on request. Flying into Nairobi this October? Karen Plains Hotel can help arrange airport transfers from JKIA or Wilson Airport on request. Send your flight details on WhatsApp before arrival so the team can guide you on timing, pickup and check-in.

Request an airport transfer

Arriving and moving around

JKIA to Karen takes about 45 to 75 minutes depending on traffic, with the Southern Bypass usually the quicker route; Wilson Airport is about 25 minutes. Transfers from either can be arranged on request and are quoted on WhatsApp, which is the simplest way to land late and still make the dawn start the next day. For the park itself, a private driver or tour vehicle is the easiest option and can be arranged through the hotel; self-drivers with a suitable vehicle can enter on their own. The city jacaranda loop is best done with a driver on a Sunday morning. For early departures to the park or to Wilson, our early morning transfer page explains how to arrange timing.

Frequently asked questions: safari mornings and jacarandas

Can I see jacarandas and go on safari on the same morning in Nairobi?

Yes. Nairobi National Park's main gate is about 20 to 30 minutes from Karen and opens around six, and the drive back through Karen's lanes passes mature jacarandas. Leave the hotel by 5:45am, spend three hours in the park and return for a late breakfast.

What time does Nairobi National Park open in October?

The gates open around six in the morning. Arriving at opening gives the best light and the most active wildlife, especially in early October when the grass is short and animals are near water. Check current fees and the Kenya Wildlife Service booking process before you go.

When do the jacarandas peak in Nairobi?

Usually in the last ten days of October, running into early November, as the short rains begin. Early October has scattered colour; late October is the safest bet for a full display in Karen and along State House Road.

Does Karen Plains Hotel arrange game drives?

The hotel does not run its own vehicles, but private tours, game drives and activity support can be arranged on request. Message the team on WhatsApp with your dates and they will guide you on drivers, timing and the park booking process.

Can I get breakfast after an early game drive?

Breakfast is available from 7:00 to 10:30am, so a return by ten works well. If you expect to be later, let reception know in advance, or stop at one of Karen's garden cafés on the drive back.

How do I get from JKIA to Karen for an October trip?

Karen Plains Hotel can arrange an airport transfer from JKIA or Wilson Airport on request, quoted on WhatsApp. The drive from JKIA takes about 45 to 75 minutes depending on traffic; send your flight details ahead so the team can advise on timing.

Few cities let you watch a lion in the grass and drive home under purple trees before breakfast. Nairobi does, for a few weeks each October. Plan one early morning, protect it, and let the rest of the trip arrange itself around it.

Book the morning, then the rest of the trip. Reserve your October nights directly with Karen Plains Hotel, or message the team on WhatsApp for transfers, drivers and early starts.
