Coming home for December is exciting and a little overwhelming. There is the long-haul flight, the relatives who want to see you on day one, the suitcase of gifts, and the question nobody likes to raise: where will you actually sleep for three weeks? Staying with family is lovely, but a place of your own nearby lets everyone keep their space. This checklist covers the practical side of a December homecoming, from the week before you fly to the day you leave.

Four weeks before you fly
- Fix your accommodation dates. Include your arrival night even if you land late, and any night before an early flight home. Choose your own dates in the booking engine; nothing is pre-selected.
- Decide how much space you need. A single room works for a short visit. For longer stays or if you'll host relatives, look at the One Bedroom Apartment, which has a separate living area and kitchen facilities.
- Think about payment. We take card and M-PESA, which helps if family members want to contribute.
- Check the cancellation terms. They depend on the rate you choose and are shown before you pay. See our cancellation and refund policy.
One week before: arrival logistics
Most homecoming stress happens in the first twelve hours. Sorting the arrival in advance means nobody has to drive to the airport late at night.

Send us your flight number and landing time. Journey times vary with Nairobi traffic, so we'll plan around your actual arrival rather than a guess. More detail is on our airport transfer stays page.
Also think about:
- How many bags, including gift suitcases, so we send the right vehicle.
- Whether you want to rest first or head straight to family. Check-in is from 12:00, so a morning arrival may need planning. Tell us your time and we'll talk it through.
- Whether you need a packed breakfast for an early start the next day.
Arrival day
- Our front desk is open 24 hours, so a late landing is fine.
- Card and M-PESA both work at the desk.
- If your room isn't ready yet, luggage storage means you can drop bags and go.
- Free on-site parking makes it easy for relatives who drive over to say hello.

The first week: settling into a rhythm
Homecoming weeks tend to follow a pattern: busy family days, late returns, and a few errands you can never quite fit in. A few things help.
- Laundry: wash, dry and fold for US$20 per bag. Useful after travel and before a trip upcountry.
- Personal shopping assistance: if you need something picked up or want help finding it, we arrange this on request and quote costs first.
- Meals: Kenyan, Swahili and traditional African cooking is central to what our kitchen does. Breakfast runs 7:00 to 10:30, and lunch and dinner can be added for US$40 per day for both meals, which is handy on days you'd rather not go out.
- Meeting family nearby: The Waterfront Karen is a few steps from the hotel, and Cave à Manger, The Wine Box's wine-paired restaurant, is in Karen Plains Arcade with us. Book tables with the restaurant directly.
- Getting around: ask us for help with Nairobi navigation. Transport for your own plans is quoted on request.
Longer stays and trips upcountry
If you're home for most of December and into January, a few extra points:
- Going upcountry for a few days? Leave luggage with us so you travel light. Tell us your dates so we can plan.
- Want to show family around? We can book guided Giraffe Centre and Nairobi National Park tours. The attractions set their own holiday opening times, so check their official information too.
- Treating a parent? Our partner spa, Manama Spa & Barbershop, is a short drive away on Lang'ata Road. Staying guests get free pickup and drop-off, and treatments are paid to Manama.
- Adding a safari? Our partner Travel Corporation Limited (Travel Corp), at The Hub Karen, quotes and operates longer safaris. Park fees are extra.
- Extending your stay? Check live availability for the extra nights before you tell the family you're staying longer.
Your own space, without being far away
Sometimes the best part of a hotel is simple: a quiet room at the end of a loud, happy day. Karen is in south-west Nairobi, green and residential, and handy for family across that side of the city. You can host people for tea, then close the door and sleep.

Departure day checklist
- Check-out is by 10:00. If your flight is late, use luggage storage and enjoy one last family lunch.
- Book your airport transfer in advance and allow for holiday traffic. Check a live traffic app on the day.
- Ask for a packed breakfast if you're leaving before 7:00.
- Settle any extras by card or M-PESA.
