Low-Rise and Residential
Unlike Kilimani, Westlands, or the CBD, Karen is still largely single-story houses on generous plots, a legacy of its original coffee and dairy farm layout. There's very little of the apartment-block density that's reshaped much of the rest of Nairobi over the past decade.
Green, Genuinely
Karen has more mature trees and more space between buildings than almost anywhere else in the city. It's part of why the area feels noticeably quieter and cooler than central Nairobi, a few degrees can be felt on a hot afternoon driving in from town.
Who Actually Lives There
Karen has a long-standing mix of local Kenyan families, expatriates, and NGO or diplomatic staff, many drawn by international schools in the area and the relative quiet. It gives the neighborhood a slightly different rhythm than more central parts of Nairobi, less foot traffic, more driveways.
What's Actually Nearby
The Karen Blixen Museum, the Giraffe Centre, and Nairobi National Park's Karen-side gate are all a short drive from most points in the neighborhood, alongside Karen Village and The Waterfront Mall for everyday shopping and food.
