When relocating to Nairobi, choose temporary accommodation close to where you will work, or close to the neighbourhood you are most likely to live in, and make sure it lets you extend while you search for a home. Your first base shapes how you experience the city, so pick it for the commute and the house-hunting, not for the first night alone.

Two questions to answer first

Where will you work?

Your office location matters most. Test the journey from any temporary base at your real start and finish times. A base that looks close on a map can mean a long commute at peak hours.

Where might you live?

If you already have a shortlist, for example Karen, Lavington, Kilimani, Westlands or Runda, staying in or near one of them lets you try daily life there before signing a lease. If you have no shortlist yet, choose a base that gives reasonable access to several options.

Use the temporary stay to explore

A few weeks in temporary accommodation is a good chance to test neighbourhoods before you commit:

• do your commute from each shortlisted area at least once at peak time;
• visit supermarkets, clinics, gyms and, if relevant, schools in person;
• walk the area in the evening and at weekends;
• note where colleagues live and why.

• Storage: room for more luggage than a normal trip.
• A workspace: a desk for admin, lease paperwork and remote work.
• Laundry: an easy way to keep clothes clean without your own machine.

• Local support: staff who can point you to services, drivers and neighbourhoods.

A note for HR teams

• Agree the length of temporary accommodation in the relocation policy, and how extensions are approved.
• Clarify which costs the company covers: room, breakfast, laundry, transport.
• Book an airport transfer for arrival day. Relocating employees often land with heavy luggage.
• If a family is relocating, consider whether more space or an apartment is needed.
