Many visitors arrive expecting a hot, humid trip because Nairobi sits close to the equator. In fact, the city is at roughly 1,800 metres above sea level, and June and July are among its coolest months. Packing for this correctly makes the whole trip more comfortable, especially if you are visiting for a tournament such as AFCON 2027.
What the weather is usually like
- Mornings and evenings: cool, often around 10 to 14 degrees Celsius.
- Daytime: mild, commonly in the low to mid 20s Celsius, with plenty of cloud.
- Rain: this is a drier period, but light drizzle on cloudy days is possible.

What to pack
- A light jacket or fleece for mornings, evenings and game drives
- Layers: t-shirts, a long-sleeve top and a light sweater
- A small foldable umbrella or light rain jacket
- Comfortable closed shoes for walking and match days
- Sunscreen and sunglasses, because the sun is strong at altitude even when it feels cool
- A scarf or beanie if you are sensitive to cold
Match days, game drives and evenings
Stadium evenings can feel cooler than you expect, so bring a warm layer even if the afternoon is pleasant. Early morning game drives at Nairobi National Park are chilly in an open vehicle, so dress in layers you can remove as the day warms up.
