Plan Your Stay · Nairobi in October
People are often surprised by Nairobi. The city sits at roughly 1,800 metres, which means that despite being almost on the equator it is rarely hot in the way visitors expect, and it gets genuinely cool after dark.
The numbers
Typical October averages for Nairobi run to daytime highs around 25°C and night-time lows near 12°C, with something in the region of 65 to 90 millimetres of rain spread across roughly nine to twelve days of the month, and about seven hours of sunshine a day. Sources vary a little, and any given year can sit either side of the average.
October is the start of the short rains. That usually means a heavy shower in the afternoon or overnight rather than day-long grey. It is not a month that stops you doing things — it is a month that rewards flexible mornings.
What that means for your bag
- Layers, not a coat. A t-shirt at midday and a fleece or light jacket in the evening covers almost every day.
- A packable rain layer. Not an umbrella you will leave in a taxi — something you can put in a day bag.
- Shoes that handle wet grass. If your plans include Karura Forest, the Trade Fair at Jamhuri Park, Ngong Racecourse or a game drive, the ground may not be dry.
- Sun protection anyway. Equatorial sun at altitude is stronger than 25°C suggests, and it burns through cloud.
- Something warm for evenings outdoors. Twelve degrees while sitting still feels a lot colder than twelve degrees while walking.
How to plan the days
Do the outdoor things early. Game drives in Nairobi National Park start at the gates at dawn for good reason — the animals are active, the light is best and the rain, if it comes, usually comes later. Keep the afternoon for something with a roof: the Karen Blixen Museum, lunch at The Waterfront, or simply not moving.
If you are here for a safari onward, October sits in the shoulder. Our safari stopover page and Masai Mara from Nairobi cover how we handle the Nairobi end of those trips.
Staying in Karen while you are here
Karen Plains Hotel sits in Karen Plains Arcade on Karen Plains Road, a few steps from The Waterfront Karen and its restaurants and supermarket. Check-in is from 12:00 and check-out is by 10:00, breakfast runs from 7:00 to 10:30, and the front desk is staffed 24 hours, so a late arrival is never a problem. Parking is free, Wi-Fi is free throughout, every room has a work desk, and a generator covers the guest rooms and the Wi-Fi when the power goes. Lunch and dinner are available together for an extra US$40 per day if you would rather not go out.
One small October comfort: the generator here covers the guest rooms and the Wi-Fi, which matters more in a month when storms occasionally take the power with them.
We will tell you honestly what the weather is doing the week you arrive, and what we would move around because of it.
