Nairobians have a name for the weeks between the end of the dry season and the settling of the short rains, and it is not on any official calendar. Nairobi's purple season runs from roughly the middle of October into November, when the jacarandas flower along the older avenues and the city's green suburbs turn lilac from the pavement up. The best way to see it is not from a single viewpoint but on the move, on foot through the lanes and parks and by car along the avenues, and this guide lays out routes for both. It starts, as most good October mornings do, in Karen, where Karen Plains Hotel on Karen Plains Road puts you a few minutes from the first walk.
Reading Nairobi's purple season before you set out
The bloom is not uniform. Trees on the same street can be a fortnight apart, and the city's districts peak at slightly different times depending on their exposure and when the first showers fall. Early October tends to be a preview; the last ten days of the month are usually the fullest; the first week of November still has colour but more of it on the ground than in the branches. The practical consequence is that a visitor with three or four mornings available should spread them across the walks and drives below rather than trying to see everything in one.
Weather matters too. Mornings are cool and bright; afternoons from the second half of October often cloud over and bring a shower. Walk early for the light and the quiet, drive mid-morning when the roads have eased, and keep the overcast late afternoon in reserve for the richest colour. For the month's climate in more detail, see our October travel tips.
Walk one: Karen's lanes at first light
Distance: as far as you like; a comfortable loop takes about an hour. Start: the hotel, on foot, at around 6:30am.
Head out along the quieter roads around Karen Road, Bogani Road and Ndege Road, where mature jacarandas lean over garden walls and the red murram verges collect the fallen flowers overnight. There is little traffic at this hour, mostly dog walkers, joggers and the occasional school run, and the air is cool enough for a light jacket. Keep to the road edge, keep gates closed and do not wander up private drives; the view from the lane is the view you came for. Loop back to the hotel for breakfast, available from 7:00 to 10:30am, or carry on to a garden café for coffee under the trees. Our Karen neighbourhood guide will help you orient yourself.
Every route in this guide starts a few minutes from Karen Plains. Karen Plains Hotel offers clean ensuite rooms, fast Wi-Fi, free secure parking, 24/7 reception and easy access to Karen's malls, restaurants, safari routes and major attractions. Book directly for the smoothest experience, room requests, airport transfer support and quick WhatsApp assistance.
Walk two: the Nairobi Arboretum
Distance: a generous network of paths, so allow an hour or two. Getting there: about 40 minutes by car from Karen, traffic depending; go on a Sunday morning if you can.
The Arboretum, beside State House Road, is the one place in the city where you can walk among jacarandas without a car passing. Established in the early colonial years as a trial ground for trees, it holds hundreds of species, labelled, and in late October the jacarandas stand out among them like lanterns. Paths are broad and mostly flat, there are benches and lawns, families picnic at weekends, and the birdlife is lively. Pair it with a slow drive along State House Road itself, where the canopies meet over the carriageway. The hotel's Arboretum page has notes on timing the trip from Karen.
Walk three: Karura Forest and City Park
Neither of these is primarily a jacaranda destination, but both reward an October morning. Karura Forest, on the north side of the city, has long, well-kept trails, a waterfall and the best forest air in Nairobi; it is a 45-minute to hour-long drive from Karen depending on traffic, so make it a half day. City Park, closer in and older, has a looser charm, big trees, monkeys and a slightly faded colonial feel that suits the purple. Combine either with the drives below for a full morning. See the Karura Forest page for the route.
Drive one: the Karen loop
Time: about an hour, best mid-morning or late afternoon. Start and finish: the hotel.
A gentle circuit of the suburb's leafiest roads, taking in Karen Road, Bogani Road and the roads around Ndege Road, with stops at the Giraffe Centre, about ten minutes from the hotel, and the Karen Blixen Museum, about the same. Drive slowly, pull well off the road for photographs, and never stop where you block a lane or a gate. If the afternoon clouds come in, this is the drive to repeat; the purple deepens under a grey sky and the roads empty.
Drive two: State House Road, Kilimani, Lavington and Upper Hill
Time: two to three hours including stops. When: Sunday morning, leaving Karen by 8:00am, for the lightest traffic of the week.
This is the city's grand tour of the bloom. From Karen, take the Ngong Road or Langata Road side depending on traffic, reach State House Road and drive it slowly in both directions, then wind through Kilimani's residential streets, where single enormous trees overhang the road, into Lavington's older avenues. Finish in Upper Hill, where the office towers rise out of the canopy and a single frame holds the city's whole story: a borrowed South American tree, planted from the early 1900s, now the backdrop to the skyline. Photography is best from the verge; some government buildings restrict it, so keep the lens on the trees. If you would rather not drive, a city tour from Karen can be arranged; our city tour page explains how.
Drive three: the park at dawn, purple on the way home
For those who want wildlife in the same morning, leave the hotel before 6:00am for the Nairobi National Park main gate, about 20 to 30 minutes away, and spend two or three hours on the park roads while the animals are near water and the grass is short. Return to Karen by late morning along roads that, in late October, are fringed with purple, and have a late breakfast. Our guide to jacarandas and safari mornings sets out the logistics.
Getting around, and why a Karen base makes it easy
Karen's walks start at the hotel door. The drives need a car: free secure parking at Karen Plains Hotel makes a hired car simple, and for anyone who would rather be driven, reception can arrange private drivers, tours and local movement support on request. Rooms are clean and ensuite, with comfortable beds, hot showers, fast Wi-Fi, a work desk and Netflix, and some have a balcony onto trees. Reception is open around the clock for dawn departures, a backup generator covers the rooms and Wi-Fi, and laundry is available for muddy walking clothes. Ask the team on WhatsApp or through the contact page for help planning your routes.
Purple season FAQ: walks, drives and getting around
When is Nairobi's purple season?
Jacarandas bloom from about mid October into November, peaking most years in the last ten days of October as the short rains begin. The exact timing varies slightly with the weather, so spread your viewing across several mornings if you can.
What is the best jacaranda drive in Nairobi?
The Sunday-morning loop from Karen via State House Road, Kilimani, Lavington and Upper Hill takes in the most famous displays with the lightest traffic. The Karen loop around Karen Road, Bogani Road and Ndege Road is shorter and quieter.
Where can I walk among jacarandas in Nairobi?
The Nairobi Arboretum, beside State House Road, is the best place to walk under the trees without traffic. Karen's lanes near Karen Plains Hotel are quiet and pleasant on foot at dawn.
Do I need a car to see the jacarandas?
For Karen's lanes, no; they are walkable from the hotel. For the Arboretum, State House Road and the city avenues, a car, taxi or private driver is far more practical, and Karen Plains can help arrange one.
Can Karen Plains Hotel help with transport for jacaranda walks and drives?
Yes. Private drivers, tours and local movement support can be arranged on request, and there is free secure parking if you prefer to self-drive. Message the team on WhatsApp with your dates and the routes you have in mind.
Purple season rewards movement. Walk a lane at dawn, drive an avenue mid-morning, go back out when the clouds come, and the city will give you a different picture each time. Base yourself in Karen and every route begins at your door.
