Kenya has two public holidays in October 2026. Mazingira Day falls on Saturday 10 October, and Mashujaa Day — Heroes’ Day — falls on Tuesday 20 October.
Why the Tuesday matters
A holiday on a Tuesday is the kind that tempts people to take the Monday off and turn it into a four-day weekend. In practice that means the weekend of 17 to 20 October behaves like a peak weekend: roads out of the city fill on the Friday and Saturday, coastal and park bookings tighten, and rooms in Nairobi itself are in shorter supply than a normal mid-October weekend.
A holiday on a Saturday, as Mazingira Day is, has much less effect — it mostly means offices are closed on a day they would have been closed anyway.
What to expect around 20 October
- Government offices and banks close on the Tuesday. If you need anything official done, do it before Friday 16 October.
- Mashujaa Day has a national celebration that rotates between counties, with associated road arrangements where it is held. Check the local news in the days beforehand if you are driving.
- Museums, parks and restaurants generally stay open and are busier than usual. Book a table rather than turning up.
- Traffic is lighter on the day itself in the city, and heavier on the roads out of it the day before.
If your trip is flexible, the week of 12 to 16 October or the days after 21 October are calmer and easier to book than the long weekend itself. If it is not flexible, book earlier than you normally would — the long weekend is one of the two or three busiest of the second half of the year.
Making it a good weekend rather than a stressful one
The trick with a Nairobi long weekend is not to spend it crossing the city. Pick a side and stay on it. From Karen you have the Giraffe Centre, the Karen Blixen Museum, Nairobi National Park and The Waterfront all within easy reach, which is enough for four days without ever joining the Ngong Road queue into town.
