The first thing most people notice when they step out of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is the air: thin, cool and faintly scented with woodsmoke and diesel, nothing like the humid blast they were braced for. Nairobi in October for first-time visitors is full of small corrections like that. The city is higher, greener, cooler and more spread out than its reputation suggests, and the month itself, with its dry mornings, soft light and early jacarandas, is one of the kindest introductions it offers.
This guide is for anyone arriving for the first time. It walks through what to sort out before you land, how to get from the airport to your hotel, how the city moves, what to see in a few days and where to sleep. We write from Karen Plains Hotel, on Karen Plains Road in the green south-west of the city, and we have tried to keep the advice honest rather than glossy.
Before you fly: paperwork, money and phones
Kenya operates an online electronic travel authorisation system for most visitors, so check the current requirements for your passport well before departure and complete the application in good time. Carry a printed or saved copy of your hotel confirmation and return flight; immigration officers occasionally ask for both. Yellow fever vaccination certificates are required if you are arriving from certain countries, so check that too.
The currency is the Kenyan shilling. Cards are accepted in hotels, malls and most restaurants, and ATMs are plentiful, but the real currency of daily life is M-Pesa, Safaricom's mobile money service, which pays for everything from parking to a bottle of water. Buy a Safaricom SIM on arrival at the airport with your passport, load airtime and data, and register for M-Pesa; it makes small transactions and ride-hailing noticeably easier. Plug sockets are the British three-pin type at 240 volts, so bring an adaptor if you need one. Drink bottled or filtered water, and pack sun protection and a light warm layer for evenings that can fall to around 13°C.
Arriving at JKIA and reaching your hotel
JKIA sits on the south-eastern edge of the city on Mombasa Road. From there to Karen is about 45 to 75 minutes by car, traffic depending, and the Southern Bypass takes most of the pain out of it by skirting the city centre entirely. Ride-hailing apps operate from the airport, but after a long flight, arriving in the dark, a pre-arranged pickup is simply calmer: a named driver, a fixed route and someone who knows where Karen Plains Road is. Karen Plains Hotel arranges transfers from JKIA and Wilson Airport on request as a paid service, quoted on WhatsApp once you share your flight details. Our JKIA to Karen transfer page explains how it works. If you are landing at Wilson, the small domestic airport used for safari flights, the drive to Karen is about 25 minutes.
Check-in is from noon and reception is staffed around the clock, so a 3am landing is not a problem; tell the team your flight number and they will expect you.

How Nairobi moves, and how you should
Nairobi is a driving city. Distances are long, pavements are patchy and nobody, resident or visitor, walks across town. Ride-hailing apps are the default for visitors: they are inexpensive by international standards, trackable and widely available, and you can pay with M-Pesa or a card linked to the app. Matatus, the privately run minibuses painted in every colour imaginable, are the backbone of local transport and an experience in themselves, but they are best tried with a local friend rather than on your first day with luggage.
Traffic is the one thing every first-timer underestimates. Weekday peaks run from about 7 to 9:30am and 4:30 to 8pm, and a journey that takes 40 minutes at 10am can take well over an hour at 6pm. Plan one big crossing of the city per day, not three, and lean on early mornings and public holidays, when the roads are wonderfully clear. In October that means Saturday 10 October, Mazingira Day, and Tuesday 20 October, Mashujaa Day, both of which are national holidays in 2026. Within Karen itself, most journeys are 5 to 15 minutes.
Nairobi in October for first-time visitors: what to see
Start with the things that are unique to this city. Nairobi National Park, about 20 to 30 minutes from Karen, is the only national park in the world inside a capital, with lion, rhino, giraffe and buffalo grazing in front of the skyline. Go at dawn, when the gate opens at around six, and pay the KWS fees through eCitizen beforehand. In early October the grass is short and the game is easy to see. The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, about 15 minutes from the hotel, lets you watch orphaned elephant calves at their 11am mud bath, by advance booking only. The Giraffe Centre, about 10 minutes away, puts a Rothschild's giraffe's nose a hand's breadth from yours.
Then add culture. The Karen Blixen Museum is the farmhouse from Out of Africa, 10 minutes from the hotel. The Bomas of Kenya stages afternoon dance performances from communities across the country. In town, the Nairobi National Museum and the Railway Museum fill a half day, and the Maasai Market, which moves between venues on different days of the week, is where you haggle for beadwork, kikoi cloth and soapstone. For October specifically, add a late-afternoon drive down State House Road or a stroll in the Nairobi Arboretum to see the jacarandas, and a walk on the Oloolua Nature Trail, 10 minutes from Karen Plains Hotel, through indigenous forest to a waterfall. A longer list, with timings, lives in our guide to hotels near Nairobi's attractions and in things to do in Nairobi in October.

Staying safe and comfortable
Nairobi is a large city with the ordinary urban cautions. Use ride-hailing or hotel-arranged transport after dark rather than walking, keep phones and cameras out of sight on busy streets, carry only the cash you need and leave passports in your room. Karen is a residential suburb and is considered one of the calmer parts of the city, but the same common sense applies. Altitude is the other adjustment: at about 1,800 metres, you may feel breathless on the first day, so drink water, go easy on alcohol and leave the Ngong Hills hike for day three. Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory; round up in taxis and leave something for guides, porters and housekeeping if the service was good.
Where to stay as a first-time visitor
For a first trip built around wildlife, culture and an easy introduction to the city, Karen is the sensible base, and we set out the full neighbourhood comparison in where to stay in Nairobi in October. The attractions above are mostly within 10 to 30 minutes, the suburb is green and quiet, and October's jacarandas are at their best in its lanes. The compromise is distance from the CBD and Westlands, about 40 to 60 minutes away, which matters only if your trip is office-bound.
Karen Plains Hotel is designed around the practical needs of exactly this kind of visitor. Rooms are clean and ensuite with comfortable beds, hot showers, fast Wi-Fi, a work desk and Netflix on the TV. Housekeeping is daily, reception is open 24 hours, parking is free and secure, and a backup generator keeps rooms and Wi-Fi running if the mains drop. Breakfast is available from 7:00 to 10:30am, a chef can prepare dinner on request, laundry is available, and the team can arrange private tours, game drives, activity support and airport transfers when you ask. There is a shared lounge, a communal guest kitchen and, in some rooms, a balcony with a view into the trees. Our rate card and contact page have the details, and WhatsApp is the fastest way to ask a question.
First-time visitor FAQ: Nairobi in October
What do first-time visitors need before arriving in Nairobi?
An approved electronic travel authorisation where required for your passport, a yellow fever certificate if you are arriving from an affected country, travel insurance, your hotel confirmation and return flight details. A British-style three-pin adaptor and a light warm layer for October evenings are also worth packing.
How do I get from JKIA to Karen?
By car along the Southern Bypass, about 45 to 75 minutes depending on traffic. Ride-hailing works from the airport, but a pre-arranged pickup is easier after a long flight. Karen Plains Hotel arranges JKIA and Wilson Airport transfers on request; send your flight details on WhatsApp and the team will quote and confirm.
Is Nairobi in October a good time for a first visit?
Yes. October brings warm, mostly dry days, cool evenings and the start of jacaranda season. Wildlife viewing in Nairobi National Park is excellent early in the month, and the short rains, when they arrive late in October, usually come as brief afternoon showers.
Do I need cash in Nairobi or can I use cards?
Cards work in hotels, malls and most restaurants, and ATMs are widely available. For small purchases, parking and markets, M-Pesa mobile money is the local norm, and registering on a Safaricom SIM at the airport makes daily life much simpler. Keep a little cash for tips and roadside stalls.
Is Karen a convenient base for a first-time visitor?
For a wildlife and culture trip, very. The Giraffe Centre and Karen Blixen Museum are about 10 minutes from Karen Plains Hotel, Sheldrick about 15 and the national park gate 20 to 30. The city centre and Westlands are about 40 to 60 minutes away, which matters mainly if you have daily meetings there.
Nairobi is generous to visitors who arrive prepared and curious. Sort the paperwork, book the transfer, pick a calm base, and let October do the rest.
Book your first Nairobi stay directly with Karen Plains Hotel and send your flight details on WhatsApp so the team can arrange your airport pickup.
