Kigali to Nairobi: Your Gateway to the Masai Mara

Kigali to Nairobi: Your Gateway to the Masai Mara

From the Land of a Thousand Hills to the Land of the Big Five

Rwanda is one of Africa's most remarkable success stories — and Kigali is one of the continent's cleanest, most vibrant capitals. But if you're a wildlife lover, there's one experience that should be on every Rwandan's bucket list: the Masai Mara. And the smartest way to get there is through Nairobi — just a short flight from Kigali.

Karen Plains Hotel in Nairobi's Karen suburb is your perfect base. We're positioned to make your journey from Kigali to the Masai Mara seamless, comfortable, and unforgettable.

Getting from Kigali to Nairobi

The Kigali–Nairobi route is well-served and surprisingly affordable:

  • RwandAir – Direct flights from Kigali International Airport to JKIA. Flight time: approximately 1 hour 40 minutes. RwandAir's service is excellent and fares are competitive.
  • Kenya Airways – Also operates this route with good frequency and connections.

Return fares typically range from $120–$200 when booked in advance. We recommend arriving in Nairobi a day before your Masai Mara departure to rest and explore Karen.

Why Stay in Karen, Nairobi?

Karen is Nairobi's most prestigious and peaceful suburb — named after Karen Blixen, author of Out of Africa. It's the ideal neighbourhood for travelers who want to be close to nature without sacrificing comfort.

From Karen Plains Hotel, you're just minutes from:

  • 🦁 Nairobi National Park – The world's only national park inside a capital city. Lions, rhinos, cheetahs, and over 400 bird species roam freely against a backdrop of the Nairobi skyline.
  • 🦒 The Giraffe Centre – Get up close with endangered Rothschild giraffes in a lush forest setting. One of Nairobi's most beloved experiences.
  • 🐘 David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust – Watch baby elephants being rehabilitated by dedicated keepers. Deeply moving and highly recommended.
  • 🏛️ Karen Blixen Museum – Step into the history of colonial Kenya and the story that inspired one of Africa's most famous books.

Your Masai Mara Journey Starts Here

The Masai Mara is arguably the greatest wildlife reserve on Earth. Home to the Great Migration — the largest movement of animals on the planet — the Mara offers game viewing that rivals anything in Africa, including Rwanda's own Akagera National Park.

From Karen Plains Hotel, our Masai Mara Transfer service departs directly to the Mara. The journey takes approximately 5–6 hours through Kenya's stunning Rift Valley landscape, or you can opt for a short charter flight.

The best time for the Great Migration (wildebeest river crossings) is July to October, but the Mara offers exceptional game viewing year-round.

The Recommended Kigali–Nairobi–Mara Itinerary
