A family holiday works best when the big outings are balanced with proper rest. Karen, in south-west Nairobi, makes that balance easier: the Giraffe Centre, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, the Karen Blixen Museum and Nairobi National Park are all in or near the neighbourhood, so a morning out doesn't have to swallow the whole day. This guide helps you plan two outings that work for most ages, the Giraffe Centre and Nairobi National Park, and the downtime around them.

Start with the room, not the itinerary
Everything is easier when the room set-up is right. Before you book, message us with the number of adults and children and the children's ages. We'll confirm which rooms and beds work for your family and your dates.
- More space: the One Bedroom Apartment has a separate living area and kitchen facilities, which helps on longer stays.
- A bath at bedtime: the Deluxe Room with Bathtub has a freestanding bathtub.
- Room to spread out: the Executive Room is our finest room, with a king bed and extra space.
Please don't assume connecting rooms. We are a calm boutique hotel rather than a resort, so there is no pool, kids' club or childcare. It suits families who want a quiet base close to the attractions.
Planning the Giraffe Centre
The Giraffe Centre is in Karen and is one of the easiest outings for mixed ages. A few planning points:
- Tickets, entry prices and any age rules: these are set by the Giraffe Centre and can change, so check the Giraffe Centre's official website before you go. We don't quote them here.
- Holiday opening times: check these on the official site too, especially around Christmas and New Year.
- A guided option: we can book a guided Giraffe Centre tour for you. It is priced; see the tour page or ask for a quote.
- Timing: a morning visit leaves the afternoon open for a nap or a lazy lunch.
Planning Nairobi National Park
Nairobi National Park sits on the edge of the city and gives children a first look at Kenyan wildlife without a long journey.
- Entry fees and rules: check the park authority's official information before you go. Park fees are separate from any tour price.
- A guided half day: we can arrange a Nairobi National Park half-day tour. It is priced; see the tour page or ask us.
- Early starts: breakfast is served from 7:00. If your tour leaves earlier, ask for a packed breakfast.
- Expectations: animals move freely, so sightings are never certain. Tell younger children it's a search, not a zoo.
- Want more? For a longer safari, our partner Travel Corporation Limited (Travel Corp), at The Hub Karen, quotes and runs itineraries. Park fees are extra.
Other outings to consider
- David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust: in or near Karen. Visiting arrangements are set by the Trust, so check their official information and book ahead.
- Karen Blixen Museum: also in or near Karen; check its official opening times.
- The Waterfront Karen: a few steps from the hotel, easy for a short walk and a meal when little legs are tired.
Build in downtime
Holiday fatigue is real, especially after a long flight. Plan at least one easy day for every outing day. Ideas that keep everyone happy:
- A slow breakfast (served until 10:30) and a morning with nowhere to be.
- Lunch at The Waterfront Karen, then back to the room.
- Dinner in: lunch and dinner at the hotel can be added for US$40 per day for both meals. Our kitchen centres on Kenyan, Swahili and traditional African cooking.
- Laundry sorted for you: wash, dry and fold, US$20 per bag.
- A grown-up break: our partner spa, Manama Spa & Barbershop, is a short drive away on Lang'ata Road. Staying guests get free pickup and drop-off; treatments are paid to Manama.
