Two days is not long, but in October it is enough to see lion at sunrise, feed a giraffe before lunch, stand on the veranda of the Out of Africa farmhouse and eat very well in Karen, all without once sitting in the worst of Nairobi's traffic. This 48 hours in Nairobi itinerary is built for exactly that kind of weekend, timed to the city's October rhythm of bright mornings, warm afternoons and cool, jacaranda-scented evenings.
The plan assumes you are sleeping in Karen, the green suburb on the city's south-western edge where most of the headline attractions cluster, and it uses Karen Plains Hotel on Karen Plains Road as the base. Timings are approximate and traffic dependent, as they always are in Nairobi, so treat the clock as a guide rather than a timetable.
Before you arrive: three bookings to make now
October is a popular month and the two things most likely to sell out are the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust visit, which runs for one hour from 11am and must be reserved in advance, and a vehicle and guide for Nairobi National Park on a holiday weekend. Mashujaa Day falls on Tuesday 20 October in 2026 and Mazingira Day on Saturday 10 October, so if your 48 hours brush either date, book ahead. The third booking is your room: reserving directly with the hotel lets you ask for a balcony room, an early breakfast or a transfer in the same message. Our Plan Your Stay hub lists what can be arranged on request.
Day one: giraffes, Blixen and a Karen evening
Midday. Check-in at Karen Plains Hotel is from noon. If you are landing at JKIA in the morning, the drive across the Southern Bypass to Karen takes about 45 to 75 minutes depending on the hour. Drop your bags, have a shower, and let the altitude settle; at around 1,800 metres, Nairobi can leave new arrivals slightly light-headed for the first afternoon.
2:00pm. The Giraffe Centre is about 10 minutes away. The afternoon is quieter than the morning school-trip rush, and the Rothschild's giraffes amble up to the raised platform in their own time. Hold a pellet flat on your palm, watch the long purple tongue reach for it, and then take the short forest loop on the far side of the sanctuary, where you may spot a turaco or a troop of Sykes' monkeys.
3:30pm. Drive on to the Karen Blixen Museum, another 10 minutes or so. The stone farmhouse, its lawns and the view towards the Ngong Hills are at their best in the slanting late light. Give it an hour, including the gift shop and the old coffee-drying yard.
5:00pm. Back towards the hotel via Karen's leafy lanes. If you are here from mid-October the jacarandas along Bogani Road and the Ndege Road area will be in their first flush. A slow drive with the windows down is the simplest pleasure of the month.
7:00pm. Dinner in Karen. Talisman is the long-standing favourite for a relaxed evening in a garden setting, Tamambo at the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden suits a more romantic table, and the terraces at Waterfront Karen or The Hub are the easy option if you would rather wander and choose. All are within about 5 to 10 minutes of the hotel. Be back early; tomorrow starts in the dark.

Day two: 48 hours in Nairobi, the safari morning
5:15am. Alarm. Dress in layers; the park is cold before the sun clears the Athi plains and warm by nine. A flask of coffee from the communal guest kitchen is a good idea.
5:40am. Leave for the Nairobi National Park main gate on Langata Road, about 20 to 30 minutes away at this hour. The gate opens at around six and the first hour of light is when lion are most likely to be moving. Fees are paid through the KWS eCitizen portal, so have that sorted the night before. With a guide, head for the Athi Basin for the open-plain species, then loop back towards Hippo Pools for a short walk by the river with the ranger. In early October the grass is short and the game is easy to find; by late month the first rains green the plains and the migrant birds begin to arrive. Our national park day-trip page explains routes and timings in more detail.
9:45am. Back to the hotel for breakfast, which is served until 10:30am. Eggs, fruit, toast and strong Kenyan coffee taste particularly good after four hours of dust and binoculars.
10:45am. Leave for the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, about 15 minutes away. The orphaned elephant calves come down to the mud wallow at 11am sharp and the keepers introduce each one by name and story. It is one of the most affecting hours in Kenya and it finishes by noon.
12:30pm. Lunch and a slow afternoon. Tin Roof Café is the garden-brunch choice, or take sandwiches to the Oloolua Nature Trail, about 10 minutes from the hotel, and walk the river path to the waterfall and the cave. If craft is more your thing, Kazuri Beads, Utamaduni Craft Centre and the Matbronze gallery are all within Karen and make an easy triangle.
4:00pm. A Bomas of Kenya afternoon show, about 10 to 15 minutes away, is the cultural counterweight to the morning's wildlife: an hour or so of dance and drumming from communities across the country, followed by a wander through the homestead replicas.
Evening. A final Karen dinner, or Carnivore on Langata Road if you want the full roast-meat spectacle. Then an early night; check-out is 10:00am, and if you are flying, the hotel can arrange a transfer to JKIA or Wilson on request.
If you only have one of the two days
Keep the safari morning and the elephants. Nairobi National Park at dawn followed by the Sheldrick hour is the single most memorable half day the city offers, and both sit on the Karen side of town. Swap the Blixen museum for the Giraffe Centre if you must choose, since the giraffes are the more interactive experience. Where to stay for 48 hours: the case for Karen Plains Hotel
A two-day plan lives or dies on logistics, and Karen keeps the drives short. Karen Plains Hotel is about 10 minutes from the Giraffe Centre and the Blixen museum, 15 from Sheldrick, 20 to 30 from the park gate and 5 to 10 from The Hub and Waterfront Karen. The rooms are clean, ensuite and quiet, with comfortable beds, hot showers, fast Wi-Fi, a work desk and Netflix on the TV for the evening you are too tired to go out. Reception is staffed around the clock, which matters when you are leaving at 5:40am, parking is free and secure, and a backup generator keeps the rooms and Wi-Fi running if the power dips. Breakfast runs from 7:00 to 10:30am and the team can set up a chef-prepared dinner, a game-drive vehicle or an airport transfer when you ask. See why the hotel works as a Giraffe Centre base and check what is on in Nairobi this weekend before you arrive.
Flying into Nairobi this October? Karen Plains Hotel can help arrange airport transfers from JKIA or Wilson Airport on request. Send your flight details on WhatsApp before arrival so the team can guide you on timing, pickup and check-in.
48 hours in Nairobi: FAQ
Is 48 hours in Nairobi enough to see the main sights?
Yes, if you stay in Karen and start early. Two days comfortably cover a dawn safari in Nairobi National Park, the Sheldrick elephants, the Giraffe Centre, the Karen Blixen Museum and an evening or two in Karen's restaurants and malls.
What time should I leave for Nairobi National Park from Karen?
Leave by about 5:40am to reach the Langata Road main gate for the six o'clock opening. The drive is about 20 to 30 minutes at that hour. The first two hours of light are the most productive for predators, and you can be back in Karen for a late breakfast.
Do I need to book the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in advance?
Yes. The public visit runs from 11am to noon and places are limited, so book online well ahead, especially around the October public holidays. The Trust is about 15 minutes from Karen Plains Hotel.
Can Karen Plains Hotel arrange a safari vehicle for the morning?
A private vehicle and guide for Nairobi National Park can be arranged on request. Send your preferred date and group size on WhatsApp and the team will quote and confirm. Park entry fees are paid separately through KWS eCitizen.
Where should I eat in Karen on a short visit?
Talisman, Tamambo at the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden and Hemingways are the established names for dinner, Tin Roof Café is the garden brunch favourite, and The Hub and Waterfront Karen offer a range of cafés and terraces about 5 to 10 minutes from the hotel.
Forty-eight hours is a short window, but October stretches it. The mornings are clear, the evenings are long, and from a Karen base the city's best moments are all within a short drive.
Book two October nights at Karen Plains Hotel directly, then message the team on WhatsApp to line up your safari morning and transfers.
