This is a good weekend to be outside in Nairobi. The long dry spell is ending, the short rains have not properly settled in, and the city has arranged itself so that two of the weekend’s better events are in the same forest on the same morning.
Saturday
Karura Charity Fun Run
Karura has more than 50 kilometres of trails, a waterfall and enough shade to make a morning run pleasant rather than punishing. A charity run is the easiest way to see a proper stretch of it.
Art in the Park
Work shown under the trees. If you have already run, this is the reward. If you have not, it is a gentler way to spend the same morning.
Thrift Pop Up Market
A city-side stop if you are heading back through town rather than straight home.
Star Gazing: A Night Under the Stars
Telescopes in the middle of the city. Nights in Nairobi at this time of year get down towards 12°C, so take a jacket you can actually sit still in.

How to fit it together
Karura is north of the city and the racecourse is south-west of it, so trying to do both in one day means crossing Nairobi twice. The cleaner plan is Karura on Saturday morning, something in town or a rest in the afternoon, stargazing in the evening if you have the energy, and then the Concours on Sunday from a base that is already on the Ngong Road side.
Everything on this list is weather-exposed. The short rains usually arrive in Nairobi through October, and late September can give you a sharp afternoon shower with little warning. Take a light rain layer and carry on — it rarely lasts.
Staying in Karen while you are here
