Home for Christmas in Nairobi: A Guide for Diaspora Visitors

9 October 2026 · Twende! by Karen PlainsChristmasDiasporaKarenNairobi

Coming home for Christmas is one of the best trips of the year, and one of the busiest. Flights fill early, roads slow down, and everyone wants a piece of your time. A little planning before you land makes the difference between a rushed visit and a proper reset.

Plan the airport run before you land

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to Karen is a drive of roughly 25 to 30 kilometres, but the time varies a lot. Off peak it can be around 45 minutes. In the festive weeks, evening arrivals and rainy afternoons can stretch that well past an hour. Arrange a pickup in advance so you are not negotiating at the arrivals gate after a long flight. If you are staying with us, we can arrange an airport transfer. Our guide on getting from JKIA to Karen covers the options in detail.

Why a hotel base works when family is nearby

Many returning visitors love staying with relatives but still want a quiet room of their own. A hotel in Karen gives you somewhere to sleep well after a long flight, take a work call, repack, or simply have an hour of peace between family visits. It also takes pressure off a busy household, especially when several people are travelling together.

  • A private room and bathroom when the family home is full
  • Breakfast served from 7:00 to 10:30 each morning
  • Free parking if you are hiring a car
  • A front desk that is open 24 hours, useful for late arrivals

Sort the small things on day one

  • Money. M-PESA is how most of Nairobi pays. Cards are accepted at many hotels and malls, but keep some cash and mobile money for smaller stops.
  • Data. Pick up a local SIM or eSIM early so maps and ride apps work from the first evening.
  • Transport. Decide how you will get around for the week. Ride apps work well in Nairobi, and a pre-arranged driver is easier for family outings.

Easy family outings close to Karen

Karen is made for relaxed family days. The Giraffe Centre is a favourite with children, Nairobi National Park is a short drive away, and the shopping and dining areas around Karen have plenty of places to sit down for a long lunch. For a quiet morning walk, Ngong Hills is within reach. See our Christmas in Karen guide for more ideas.

Book early for December

Availability across Nairobi often tightens from mid December through the first week of January. If you already know your dates, it is worth confirming your stay early rather than closer to travel.
