Booking a Nairobi Hotel in October 2026: Nine Things to Check Before You Pay

October is a busy month in Nairobi. The expo calendar is dense, the short rains arrive, there is a public holiday in the middle of the month, and the safari season is turning over. All of which makes it a month where a little checking before you pay saves a lot of irritation later.

Here is what we would check, in the order we would check it.

1. What the rate actually includes

“From US$60” can mean room only, or it can mean room with breakfast. Ours are quoted room only, with breakfast available separately, so you always know which one you are looking at. Ask the question directly rather than assuming.

2. Whether your dates collide with an expo

October 2026 has an unusually full exhibition calendar. Foodpro East Africa runs at the Sarit Centre from 6 to 8 October. Mega Clima, Mega Water and Mega Electricity all run at the Sarit Expo Centre from 13 to 15 October, with TEMS Africa following on 15 and 16 October. Big 5 Construct Kenya takes the same venue from 21 to 23 October. Those weeks are the ones where rooms across the city tighten and rates move.

3. The Mashujaa Day holiday

Mashujaa Day falls on Tuesday 20 October 2026, and Mazingira Day on Saturday 10 October. A Tuesday holiday tempts people to bridge the Monday, which makes the weekend before it busier than a normal one, both in the city and on the road out to the coast and the parks.

4. Cancellation and prepayment terms

These vary by rate almost everywhere, and the cheapest rate is usually the least flexible. Read what applies to the specific rate you are choosing, not the headline policy. Ours are shown before you pay, and the cancellation and refund policy is on the site.

5. Whether the hotel has backup power

Power interruptions happen. Ask what the generator actually covers — some cover corridors and reception only. Ours covers the guest rooms and the Wi-Fi.

6. How you are getting from the airport

Agree this before you fly, with a price attached. We quote fixed rates per vehicle: JKIA sedan US$55, JKIA Land Cruiser US$95, Wilson sedan US$45, Wilson Land Cruiser US$85.

7. Where in Nairobi you are actually staying

Nairobi is spread out and the traffic is real. A cheap room on the wrong side of the city can cost you two hours a day. Be honest about where you will spend your time, then pick accordingly. Karen is quiet and green, close to the Giraffe Centre, Karen Blixen Museum and Nairobi National Park, and on the Ngong Road corridor rather than in the middle of town.

8. Whether meals are available on site

If you are arriving late, working late, or travelling with children, going out again is not always appealing. Ask what is available and when. Breakfast here runs 7:00 to 10:30, and lunch and dinner together are US$40 per day.

9. Who you will actually be talking to

Booking through an aggregator means your messages go through a platform. Booking direct means they go to the front desk. When your flight is delayed or your plans change, that difference matters.

Staying in Karen while you are here

Karen Plains Hotel sits in Karen Plains Arcade on Karen Plains Road, a few steps from The Waterfront Karen and its restaurants and supermarket. Check-in is from 12:00 and check-out is by 10:00, breakfast runs from 7:00 to 10:30, and the front desk is staffed 24 hours, so a late arrival is never a problem. Parking is free, Wi-Fi is free throughout, every room has a work desk, and a generator covers the guest rooms and the Wi-Fi when the power goes.
