Staying in Nairobi Over New Year? Plan Your Room, Transport and January Adventures
Share
Seeing in the New Year in Nairobi is less about one big night and more about the few days around it: where you sleep, how you get to and from your plans, and what you do once January arrives. This guide covers all three for a stay in Karen, south-west Nairobi. We won't list New Year events here, because details change every year and we only publish what we can confirm. Instead, you'll find a practical way to plan your room, your transport and your first adventures of the year.

Part one: your room around 31 December
Get the dates right
An easy New Year booking mistake is forgetting the morning after. Check-out is by 10:00, including on 1 January. If you're out late on 31 December and want a slow start, book the night of 1 January too.
- Choose your own check-in and check-out dates in the booking engine. Nothing is pre-selected.
- Check-in is from 12:00, so an early arrival on 31 December may need a plan. Tell us your time; luggage storage helps.
- Breakfast is served from 7:00 to 10:30.
- Cancellation and prepayment terms depend on the rate you choose and are shown before you pay. See our cancellation and refund policy.
Pick the room that matches your plans
| If your New Year looks like this | Consider |
|---|---|
| A long bath after a late night | Deluxe Room with Bathtub |
| A quiet balcony to watch the first morning of the year | King Room with Balcony or Deluxe Room with Bathtub and Balcony |
| A longer stay into January with space to work | Executive Room or Deluxe Room |
| A longer family visit | One Bedroom Apartment, with a separate living area and kitchen facilities |
What happens at the hotel on New Year's Eve
To be clear: Karen Plains Hotel does not host a New Year's Eve party. The hotel stays a calm place to return to, whatever you have planned. Our front desk is open 24 hours, so a late return is no problem.
Part two: plans for the night, and how to get there
Finding plans
Restaurants, bars and venues across Nairobi decide their own New Year arrangements, and those change from year to year. Our advice:
- Check each venue's own announcements for this year, rather than relying on older listings.
- Book tables and tickets directly with the venue. We can suggest places, but we can't promise reservations.
- Closer to home, Cave à Manger, The Wine Box's wine-paired restaurant, is in Karen Plains Arcade, the same arcade as the hotel, and The Waterfront Karen is a few steps away. Ask them directly about their holiday opening hours.
- Cultiva, a farm-to-table restaurant, is also in Karen. Plan transport rather than walking.
Transport, arranged on request
New Year's Eve is not the night to be searching for a ride. Tell us where you're going and when you want to leave and return, and we'll quote transport before anything is confirmed.
- Journey times vary with Nairobi traffic; check a live traffic app for your schedule, and allow extra time on busy holiday evenings.
- If you're driving yourself, there's free on-site parking at the hotel.
- Arriving or leaving by air around the holiday? Private airport transfers are priced per vehicle, one way: JKIA sedan US$55, JKIA 4×4 Land Cruiser US$95, Wilson sedan US$45, Wilson 4×4 US$85.

Part three: January adventures
Once the celebrations are over, early January is a good time to get out and explore. Here's what you can set up from Karen.
Close to the hotel
- Nairobi National Park half-day tour: bookable through us. Park fees apply, and wildlife sightings are never certain. Ask for a packed breakfast if you leave before 7:00.
- Giraffe Centre tour: an easy half day in Karen, bookable through us.
- David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and Karen Blixen Museum: both in or near Karen. Check their official information for January opening arrangements.
- A recovery afternoon: our offsite partner spa, Manama Spa & Barbershop, is a short drive away on Lang'ata Road. Staying guests get free pickup and drop-off; treatments are booked and paid with Manama.
Further afield: a partner safari
For a longer trip, our partner Travel Corporation Limited (Travel Corp), at The Hub Karen, plans and operates safaris. They quote the itinerary, and what's included depends on that quote. Park fees are extra. Leave spare luggage with us while you're away, and come back to laundry (US$20 per bag, wash, dry and fold) and a proper meal.
A sample New Year stay (an example, not a hotel programme)
- 30 December: arrive, private transfer, check in from 12:00.
- 31 December: easy day around The Waterfront Karen; evening plans of your own, with transport quoted in advance.
- 1 January: slow breakfast (served until 10:30), quiet afternoon, dinner at the hotel. Lunch and dinner can be added for US$40 per day for both meals.
- 2 January: Nairobi National Park half-day tour.
- 3 January onwards: a Giraffe Centre morning, a Manama afternoon, or a longer safari with Travel Corp.
Food to start the year
