A First-Timer's Guide to Nairobi

A First-Timer's Guide to Nairobi

Nairobi is one of Africa's most dynamic and surprising cities — a place where you can have breakfast in a leafy suburb, do a game drive with lions and rhinos before lunch, and watch world-class wildlife at a giraffe sanctuary in the afternoon. For first-time visitors, it can feel overwhelming to know where to start. This guide covers everything you need to arrive confident and make the most of your time in Nairobi.

Getting to Know Nairobi

Nairobi is Kenya's capital and East Africa's largest city, home to approximately 5 million people. It sits at an elevation of 1,795 metres above sea level — which gives it a pleasantly mild climate year-round, with average temperatures between 15°C and 25°C. The city is divided into distinct areas, each with its own character. The CBD (Central Business District) is busy and commercial. Westlands is cosmopolitan and full of restaurants and nightlife. Karen and Langata in the southwest are leafy, spacious, and home to most of the city's top wildlife attractions.

For first-time visitors, Karen is the recommended base. It is quieter, safer, and better positioned for wildlife experiences than the city centre — and it puts Nairobi National Park, the Giraffe Centre, Karen Blixen Museum, and Wilson Airport all within 15 minutes of your hotel.

Arriving in Nairobi

Most international flights land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), located approximately 18 kilometres from Karen. The journey from JKIA to Karen takes 45 to 60 minutes depending on traffic. Options include hotel transfer, Uber, Bolt, and licensed taxis. Read our full guide on how to get from JKIA to Karen, Nairobi for a full breakdown of all your arrival options.

Kenya operates an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) system — ensure yours is approved before you fly. Currency exchange and ATMs are available inside the arrivals hall.

When to Visit Nairobi

Nairobi is a year-round destination, but the dry seasons bring the best conditions for wildlife and outdoor activities. The two key windows are:

  • January to March: Short dry season — excellent game viewing, fewer crowds, good value
  • June to October: Long dry season — peak safari season, wildebeest migration in the Masai Mara, best game viewing conditions

The long rains (April to May) and short rains (November) are perfectly manageable in Nairobi itself, but some roads in remote safari areas can become difficult. Read our guide on the best time to visit Kenya for a safari for a full month-by-month breakdown.

Top Things to Do in Nairobi

Nairobi National Park

One of the world's only national parks located within a capital city — home to lions, black rhinos, leopards, giraffes, buffalo, and over 400 bird species, with the Nairobi skyline visible in the background. A morning game drive at Nairobi National Park is one of the great travel experiences in Africa and takes only 3 to 4 hours. Read our Nairobi National Park game drive guide for what to expect.

Giraffe Centre

The Giraffe Centre in Karen is one of East Africa's most loved wildlife experiences — a conservation centre where you can hand-feed endangered Rothschild giraffes at eye level from a raised wooden platform. It takes about 90 minutes and is suitable for all ages. A must-visit for first-timers.

Karen Blixen Museum

The former home of Danish author Karen Blixen, whose memoir Out of Africa gave the Karen suburb its name and brought international attention to Kenya. The museum is a beautifully restored colonial farmhouse set in mature grounds with views of the Ngong Hills. Read our Karen Blixen Museum visit guide for opening hours, entry fees, and planning tips.

David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

The world-famous elephant orphanage, located adjacent to Nairobi National Park. Baby elephants rescued from the wild are raised here before being reintroduced. Public visiting hours are 11am to 12pm daily — arrive early as it fills up. One of the most moving wildlife experiences in East Africa.

Masai Mara Safari

No first visit to Kenya is complete without a Masai Mara trip. The Mara is approximately 45 minutes from Nairobi by scheduled flight from Wilson Airport, or 5 to 6 hours by road. Karen Plains Hotel is 10 minutes from Wilson Airport — making it the ideal Nairobi base before your Mara trip. Read our guide on Nairobi to Masai Mara: road vs. flight for all your options. We can arrange Masai Mara safari packages directly from the hotel.

Getting Around Nairobi

Uber and Bolt are the recommended transport options for visitors — safe, predictable pricing, and widely available across Nairobi. Licensed taxis are also available, particularly at hotels and major venues. Agree on the fare before getting in if using a non-app taxi.

Traffic in Nairobi can be severe during peak hours (7am–9am and 4pm–7pm on weekdays). Plan your game drives and airport transfers outside these windows where possible. Staying in Karen significantly reduces the amount of city traffic you need to navigate.

Safety in Nairobi

Nairobi is a large city with the safety considerations that come with that. In practice, most visitors to well-located hotels in Karen, Westlands, or other established tourist areas experience no safety issues. The key guidelines are straightforward: use Uber or Bolt rather than hailing taxis on the street, avoid displaying valuables in public, don't walk alone in unfamiliar areas after dark, and follow your hotel's advice on specific areas to avoid.

Karen is one of Nairobi's safest neighbourhoods — established, well-lit, and familiar to regular visitors.
