Best Time to Visit Kenya for a Safari
Share
Kenya is a year-round safari destination, but timing your visit well makes a significant difference to what you see and how much you pay. This guide breaks down the seasons, the wildebeest migration calendar, and what to expect month by month so you can plan your trip with confidence.
Kenya's Two Main Safari Seasons
Peak Season: July to October
This is the most popular time to visit Kenya and for good reason. The dry season means animals congregate around water sources, making them easier to spot. Vegetation is lower, visibility is better, and the famous wildebeest migration reaches its dramatic river-crossing peak in the Masai Mara between July and September.
Expect higher accommodation rates and more visitors at popular parks during this window. Book well in advance — particularly for Masai Mara camps, which fill up months ahead of the migration peak.
Shoulder Season: January to March
The short dry season between January and March offers excellent game viewing at lower prices. Crowds are thinner, rates are more reasonable, and wildlife is still very active. This is one of the best times to visit if you want quality safari experiences without peak season prices.
The Wildebeest Migration: Kenya's Signature Wildlife Event
The wildebeest migration is the largest animal movement on earth — over 1.5 million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle moving in a continuous loop between Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Masai Mara. Understanding the calendar helps you position your visit correctly.
- January to March: Herds calving in the Serengeti, Tanzania
- April to June: Herds moving northward through Tanzania
- July to August: Herds arriving in the Masai Mara; river crossings begin
- September to October: Peak river crossing season in the Masai Mara — the most dramatic period
- November to December: Herds moving south again toward Tanzania
If witnessing the Mara River crossings is your goal, target July to October. If you want to see the migration without the crowds, early July or late October offer a window before and after the peak.
Month-by-Month Breakdown
January – February
Dry, warm, and excellent for game viewing. Lower crowd levels and good value rates. One of the most underrated times to visit Kenya.
March – May
The long rains arrive, bringing lush green landscapes and dramatically reduced visitor numbers. Some lodges close or reduce operations. Road conditions in remote areas can be challenging. Birdwatching is exceptional during this period.
June
Rains ease and the season begins to shift. An excellent transitional month — rates are still reasonable and game viewing improves significantly as vegetation thins. The wildebeest migration is beginning to push into the Mara ecosystem.
July – October
Peak safari season. Dry conditions, outstanding game viewing, and the wildebeest river crossings. Book accommodation and transfers well in advance for this window.
November – December
Short rains arrive, usually lighter and more predictable than the long rains. Rates ease, crowds thin, and game is still plentiful. A good option for visitors who want quality experiences at better value.
Planning Your Nairobi Stopover Around Your Safari
Most international visitors to the Masai Mara fly into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and either fly directly to the Mara or spend a night or two in Nairobi first. Karen is the ideal base for a Nairobi stopover — it sits adjacent to Nairobi National Park, 15 minutes from the Giraffe Centre, and is well positioned for both JKIA transfers and onward Mara connections.
Read our guide on using Nairobi as a safari stopover for a full breakdown of how to structure your trip.
Getting to the Masai Mara from Nairobi
There are two main options for travelling from Nairobi to the Masai Mara:
- By air: Scheduled flights depart from Wilson Airport (not JKIA) and take approximately 45 minutes. This is the most comfortable and time-efficient option.
- By road: The drive takes 5 to 6 hours on tarmac and murram roads. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended. Some operators offer shared road transfers at lower cost.
