Things to Do Near the Giraffe Centre, Nairobi

The Giraffe Centre in Karen is one of Nairobi's most visited attractions — and it sits at the heart of one of the city's richest clusters of wildlife, culture, and dining experiences. If you are visiting the Giraffe Centre, you are already in the right part of Nairobi to make a full day of it. This guide covers the best things to do near the Giraffe Centre, all within easy reach of Karen Plains Hotel.

The Giraffe Centre

The Giraffe Centre is a conservation project run by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW Kenya), focused on the endangered Rothschild giraffe. Visitors can hand-feed the giraffes from a raised wooden platform — bringing you literally face to face with one of Africa's most iconic animals. The experience takes about 90 minutes and is suitable for all ages.

The centre is open daily and entry fees apply. Arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the busiest periods. Karen Plains Hotel is 15 minutes from the Giraffe Centre and can arrange transport for guests.

David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage is one of the most moving wildlife experiences available in East Africa. Located adjacent to Nairobi National Park's main gate — approximately 10 minutes from the Giraffe Centre — the orphanage rescues and rehabilitates baby elephants before reintroducing them to the wild.

Public visiting hours are 11am to 12pm daily. The baby elephants are brought out for their midday mud bath and feeding during this window. Entry is by donation. Arrive by 10:45am to get a good position. This is one of the few wildlife experiences in the world where you can get within metres of wild elephant calves in a responsible, conservation-focused setting.

Nairobi National Park

Nairobi National Park is approximately 10 minutes from the Giraffe Centre and is one of the world's most extraordinary wildlife settings — a fully fenced national park on the edge of a capital city, home to lions, black rhinos, leopards, giraffes, buffalo, and over 400 bird species.

A morning game drive takes 3 to 4 hours and can be combined with a Giraffe Centre afternoon for a complete Karen wildlife day. Karen Plains Hotel can arrange guided game drives directly for guests. Read our Nairobi National Park game drive guide for what to expect, entry fees, and timing tips.

Karen Blixen Museum

The Karen Blixen Museum is 5 minutes from the Giraffe Centre — making it the natural next stop on a Karen afternoon. The museum occupies the restored farmhouse where Danish author Karen Blixen lived from 1914 to 1931, and whose memoir Out of Africa gave the Karen suburb its name.

The house is beautifully preserved, the grounds are mature and peaceful, and the guided tour covers both Blixen's personal story and the broader history of the Karen area. Allow 2 hours including the grounds. The Karen Blixen Coffee Garden next door is an excellent choice for a post-museum tea or light meal. Read our full Karen Blixen Museum visit guide for opening hours and planning details.

Nairobi Safari Walk

The Nairobi Safari Walk is a Kenya Wildlife Service facility adjacent to Nairobi National Park's main gate — close to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. It offers a raised boardwalk through a variety of Kenyan habitats, with enclosures housing animals that cannot be released into the wild — including white rhinos, cheetahs, and lions. It takes about 2 hours and is a good option if you want wildlife viewing in a more controlled environment than a full game drive.

Karen Roundabout and Shopping

The Karen Roundabout area — with Karen Shopping Centre and Waterfront Shopping Centre — is 10 minutes from the Giraffe Centre and makes a good end to a Karen day. Good coffee at Artcaffe or Java House, independent boutiques, craft shops, and pharmacies. The Karen area has a relaxed, village-like shopping character that is very different from Nairobi's city centre malls.
