Where to Stay for Big 5 Construct Kenya: Karen or Westlands?
Share
Big 5 Construct Kenya runs from 21 to 23 October 2026 at Sarit Expo Centre in Westlands (see our Big 5 guide). For most visitors the accommodation decision comes down to two areas: Westlands, where the venue is, and Karen, where we are. This is our honest comparison. We would rather you choose well than choose us for the wrong reasons.
The short answer
- Stay in Westlands if you are on the stand from opening to close, need to reach the venue quickly for setup or breakdown, or want to walk to evening networking events.
- Consider Karen if you are staying beyond the three show days, want quiet evenings and proper sleep, have meetings in the south or west of Nairobi, or plan to visit Nairobi National Park, the Giraffe Centre or Wilson Airport.
Westlands: closest to the show floor
Sarit Expo Centre sits inside the Sarit Centre in Westlands, one of Nairobi's main business and hospitality districts. Staying nearby means short transfers, easy access to restaurants and bars, and flexibility if you need to return to your room during the day.
The trade-offs are that Westlands is busy and often noisy into the evening. During a major trade show, rooms near the venue are also in higher demand. Book early if proximity is your priority.
Karen: quieter, greener and further out
Karen is a leafy, low-rise suburb on Nairobi's south-western edge. By road it is roughly 15 km from Sarit Expo Centre. On a clear road that takes around 20 minutes. In weekday morning traffic it can take far longer, so treat the commute as the main cost of staying here. We cover it in detail in Staying in Karen and Attending Big 5 at Sarit.
What you gain is space and calm. Evenings are quiet, the air is fresher and the neighbourhood has good restaurants within easy reach. Karen is also close to Wilson Airport, Nairobi National Park, the Giraffe Centre and the Karen Blixen Museum, which helps if your trip includes domestic flights or a day of leisure.

Questions that decide it
How many hours will you spend on the stand?
Staff running a stand from 10:00 to 17:00 on all three days get the most value from being close. A buyer visiting on one or two days, or a director dropping in between meetings, has more flexibility.
Where are your other meetings?
If your meetings are in Westlands, Upper Hill or the CBD, Westlands keeps things simple. If they are along Ngong Road, Lang'ata, Karen or towards the southern bypass, Karen may shorten your non-show journeys.
How long are you staying?
For a three-night trip, proximity usually wins. For a week or more, the quality of your evenings and sleep matters more. Many visitors combine the show with site visits or meetings, which we cover in Combining Big 5 with Business Meetings in Nairobi.
Can you split the stay?
Some teams stay near the venue for show days, then move to Karen for the extension. Others put setup crews in Westlands and senior staff or visiting clients in Karen. Our coordinator's checklist covers how to manage a split booking.

Frequently asked questions
Is Karen too far from Sarit Expo Centre?
It depends on your role. It is about 15 km, so stand staff attending every day may prefer Westlands. Visitors on flexible schedules, or staying longer, often find Karen's quiet worth the drive.
Which area is closer to Wilson Airport?
Karen. Karen Plains Hotel is around 13–15 minutes from Wilson Airport, which handles many domestic and safari flights.
Should an exhibitor team split its accommodation?
It can work well: crews who need early venue access stay close to Sarit, while staff with meetings elsewhere or longer stays base themselves in Karen.
