Taru: Art as Memory & Belonging Nairobi

At Karen Plains Hotel, we believe that hospitality is not just about rooms and rest — it is about storytelling, place, and presence. Art, in this sense, becomes a language: one that holds memory, emotion, and history without needing translation.

This season, our walls carry the work of Taru, a Nairobi-based visual artist whose practice is deeply shaped by observation — of people, of spaces, and of the quiet, often overlooked moments that make up daily life in Kenya’s capital.

Beyond the Canvas: Who Is Taru?

For someone encountering his work for the first time, Taru is best understood not only as an artist, but as a witness. A social person by nature, he moves through the world with an attentiveness that borders on devotion — watching how people interact, how communities form, and how meaning is built in small, human gestures.

His commitment to social impact extends beyond the studio. Taru currently volunteers with Watoto Wasome, a literacy organisation supporting children aged 3–10 in underserved communities. This grounding in service subtly informs his art: it is never detached from people, and never indifferent to context.

Nairobi as Muse and Mirror

Nairobi has always been a city of contrasts — colonial and post-colonial, formal and informal, hurried and reflective. From the days of railway camps and administrative quarters to today’s layered neighbourhoods and creative enclaves, the city has shaped generations of artists who work at the intersection of identity and environment.

For Taru, Nairobi is both muse and mirror.

The city has taught him how to relate — to move between cultures, communities, and conversations with curiosity rather than certainty. It is this sensibility that gives his work its emotional accessibility. His pieces often feel familiar even when abstract, as though they echo moments the viewer has lived but never named.

The Act of Creating: Movement, Solitude, and Space

Creation, for Taru, begins with movement. Sometimes it is a walk through the city, watching people pass. Other times, it is the intimacy of a sketchbook — loose, unguarded drawings made without pressure or interruption.

Once inside the studio, the outside world fades. There are no distractions, only focus. Yet even in solitude, the work remains social. His environments — especially spaces shared with other creatives — act as catalysts, prompting new ways of seeing and thinking.

This sensitivity to space is one reason his work feels at home within Karen Plains Hotel. Just as a hotel room holds traces of many lives passing through, Taru’s art holds layered experiences — personal, collective, and imagined.

Art as Emotional Exchange

A recurring theme in Taru’s practice is emotional honesty. He creates from personal experience, believing that authenticity is what allows art to resonate across difference.

His greatest goal is not aesthetic perfection, but emotional response. A pause. A recognition. A thought that lingers longer than expected.

Moments that remind him why he creates often come unexpectedly: when someone connects deeply with a piece and chooses to live with it, or when he stands quietly in an exhibition space, absorbing the work of other artists and feeling part of a wider, ongoing conversation.

Home, Reimagined

When asked what “home” means to him now, Taru describes it as comfort, peace, and freedom from judgment — a place where one can fully be themselves.

This idea of home aligns closely with our philosophy at Karen Plains Hotel. We aim to create spaces where guests feel grounded yet inspired, held yet free. Art plays a vital role in this — not as decoration, but as companionship.

Collecting Living Stories

All of Taru’s artworks currently exhibited at Karen Plains Hotel are available for purchase. Each piece is not just an object, but a fragment of Nairobi’s contemporary creative history — shaped by the city, its people, and its evolving cultural landscape.

By collecting his work, guests become patrons of Kenya’s next generation of artists, supporting practices that are rooted locally yet speak universally.

If a piece speaks to you during your stay, we invite you to ask our team for more details. Like a good memory, it may be something worth taking home.
